Questions about network configuration
...ut here's a first bunch :o)
Cheers,
Niki
PS: I've started on Linux with Slackware (7.1), hence a habit of
configuring my system with Vi rather than some configuration helpers.
Even if they do the job as good, it's just a matter of personal taste
and habits.

GRUB and vga=788
...in
console mode.
However, I tried this on my minimal CentOS 5 install, and right after
GRUB, the screen just blanks. I add that this (test) machine ran maybe a
dozen other distros before, and the 'vga=788' line always did the trick.
Any suggestions?

Re: CentOS Digest, Vol 28, Issue 28
...I entered the GRUB shell and booted CentOS without problems, using tab
completion.
I double- and triple-checked after this, but I can't seem to find the
error. The stanza seems OK, but still it won't work.
Do you see a mistake that I don't see?

Unable to write to a directory I created and own with Windows 200 0
Dear SAMBA Gurus:
This is my first samba installation. So please bear with me. I set up my
UNIX id the way my Windows 2000 ID is. I am able to map my home directory.
But I am unable to write to it. When I went to the UNIX server running samba
and set the permission to 777 I am able to write to the directory which is
mapped.
The UNIX server is a HP Server. This is how my SMB.CONF file entries

Thunar file manager. Did anyone manage to do this with CentOS?
2) Is there some HOWTO about configuring that nice 3D-desktop? I have an
older NVidia card, a GeForce2. I wonder if this is enough.

Totem Can't Read .wmv Files
When I try to read a .wmv file, I get the error message:
"Totem could not play 'file://tmp/F15.wmv'. You do not have a
decoder installed to handle this file. You might need to install the
necessary plugins.'
Granted that I am missing something, what is it, and where do I get it /
install it?
Thanks in advance -- Bob T.

yum groupinstall "Development Tools" overkill

of 108 MB of packages... including the whole load of GNOME libs. Gasp!
Is there any comprehensive list (in some forum or some WiKi) for
everything necessary to build apps from source and/or build source RPMS?

"core" package groups
...and then I install what I really need. The same thing
applies for KDE, with 'apt-get install kde-core'.
Having such a thing would be great on CentOS. Currently, 'yum
groupinstall <group>' tends to install many things.
What do you think?

Truetype fonts
I am trying to install on a CentOS5 box
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/files/msttcorefonts-2.0-1.noarch.rpm
then did an xfs restart, even an alt-ctrl-backspace.
The fonts are located in /usr/share/fonts/msttcorefonts/ with
the owner root & 644.
I can't see them when I go to preferences > fonts.
I have another computer with CentOS5, the fonts are installed
and I can use them w/o

1) Can you point me to some reliable bit of information, even if it's
laconic?
2) If I understand the info on http://jpackage.org/yum.php correctly,
Java is not yet available for CentOS 5. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Problems setting up legacy NVidia card
...---------------------------------------------
This leaves me a bit clueless.
Where has my original xorg.conf (the long version) gone? Is there a way
to get it back somehow? And where does this new - and severely truncated
xorg.conf file come from?
Any suggestions?
