USB-FDD
Hi,
I'm working on making an USB flash disk bootable and have succeeded in
booting Linux using syslinux from disk in USB-HDD mode. Is there a way
to do it in USB-FDD mode, possibly also using syslinux as a bootloader?
Thanks in advance.

usb-fdd with isohybrid??
I finally got around to testing the isohybrid, and it seemed to work in the creation, but in my
lab, it sees the flash as a usb-fdd, and when I tried to boot from it, I just get a cursor in the
top left. In linux it comes up as a cdrom.
Is there a process for this, or is this a case of having to use another method.
Some time ago, I had use syslinux to boot from a flash, but I had to set an option in the cmos
that would th...

...sting to use WinImage as it also allows easy
injection of new files *and* updating of already existing files.
May I ask which vendor is distributing a DOS FW update that is 20MB? I'd
like to see the files. Sometimes you just need the .bin/.rom and the actual
FW update EXE and it would fit a 5MB FDD image.

Memdisk and big floppy images
The narod.ru images are super outdated (FreeDOS kernel 2028) unfortunately.
If you are interested I could provide a 5MB FDD image template based on
FreeDOS 2041 kernel (the latest available at that time in 2014) where you
would just inject your ROM and EXE (and possibly adjust autoexec.bat to
autostart/apply the FW update). It's a minimal FreeDOS FDD image that
defaults to a clean boot with bare minimum settings (se...

Memdisk and big floppy images
Dear Syslinux folks,
For a firmware update I am following the Gentoo Wiki [1] to create a floppy
image of 20 MB, so that the vendor update utility fits.
Unfortunately, FreeDOS does not load, and it seems to hang loading the
FreeDOS kernel. The original FreeDOS image boots. Do you know if that issue
is memdisk related? It?s started from GRUB with the commands below.
linux16 /boot/memdisk

Open Source UML Tool for Ruby on Rails?
I am new to web development, Ruby on Rails, and UML as well. I was
wondering if there were any free tools available for UML design.
There is a list of free tools on wikipedia under UML tools, but I don''t
understand if I need a tool that supports the ruby language. If anyone
uses a free UML tool for designing Ruby on Rails apps, please let me
know what you use.

Memdisk and big floppy images
Haven't yet had a need for 10MB FDD images. The biggest I had to create was
5MB (5760kb). At that time I had to use WinImage to create the FDD image
and it took me a while to figure out the correct settings.
My notes state:
"I'm getting 'missing FAT' errors in WinImage, and 7-zip complains about
'unexpected end...

makebootfat: an utility to create bootable USB disks
...As far I know it's the most advanced tool available able to make
bootable USB disks.
It's able to autodetect/partition/format/populate the USB disk in a
single step without any user interaction. It's also able to create
disk images which are compatibles with all the three standards
USB-FDD, USB-HDD and USB-ZIP at the same time.
This is the manpage:

This is the download page:

Sobre categorías de factores extraídos de un data.frame
Hola estimados miembros de la lista,
Tengo una inquietud.
Les cuento: tengo un conjunto de datos en un data.frame. Algunas de las
variables que están en él son del tipo factor. Estos factores,
naturalmente, tiene categorías: a veces demasiadas categorías y muchas de
ellas con 1 individuo contemplando el data.frame más de 1 millón de
individuos.
Estas pequeñas cantidades creo que me están

nopassany parameter causing trouble
I'm running into an issue which I didn't expect to encounter.
When specifying the "nopassany" parameter to hide physical drives, I'm
getting different output from ELTORITO.SYS (v1.5, syslinux distro) such
that it fails.
My intent is a LiveCD functionality with a DOS RAMDISK program taking
over as drive C:, meaning either no FAT partitions on harddisks and
removable disks

USB boot
...mputer into Linux. I think this is possible but I'm having
problems and have some questions:
1. What should be on the MBR of the USB device? I have tried using the
mbr.bin in the syslinux-2.07 distro.
2. How does this device appear to the BIOS, i.e. what should the boot
device be? USB-FDD, USB-ZIP, or USB-HDD?
I have tried several things, but have had no success. I tried using
some instructions from SPBlinux <http://www.8ung.at/spblinux/index.htm>,
but have had no success. Has anyone else out there?
Thanks,
David

Dell Latitude E6410 and BIOS drive ordering
I'm posting as an FYI.
I was testing BIOS A04 with a UFD (USB Flash Drive) but it probably
applies to everything that looks like a USB hard drive. My previous
statement was partially incorrect as I did find a scenario to the
contrary.
I tried with FDD then CD at the top of the list and tried with both
just disabled (without reordering first). I tried with the SATA
controller in ATA, AHCI and RAID/IRRT mode. I tried letting the
laptop autoboot to PXE with the order of the remaining items as PXE,
USB, HDD and PXE, HDD, USB. I tried manually boo...

Slow performance booting USB device with 3.xx version
With the new 3.01 and 3.07 version I found a big slowdown booting from
USB devices.
On my PC it takes more than 2 minutes to load the kernel and the
initrd filesystem. Compared with the previous behaviour of syslinux
2.13 with takes only 10 seconds or little more.
The BIOS boots in FDD mode (DriveNumber variable is 0). I've also
tried to disable the EDD support in the source. But the boot process
takes always a long time.
I've also a PC which boots in HDD mode (DriveNumber has the highest
bit set) and it is also slower, approx 20 seconds compared to the
previous 10.

SYSLINUX and USB keys
...Award BIOS; I can't get it to
show any other version information.
Second, even though the "system configuration" screen shows the USB key
as a "hard drive", it WILL NOT try to boot it if the boot screen is set
to USB-HDD.
It will try to boot it if set to USB-ZIP or USB-FDD, but both of those
will crash due to geometry mismatch. I have verified that there is no
way to query the geometry from the BIOS (just as there isn't for real
floppy drives.) The only way to get that to recognize is presumably to
format the entire key (no partition table) with the correct...

Unbootable machine
Hello Peter & Jeremy,
I've found an ordinary desktop PC (with Phoenix Award BIOS 6.00PG) that
won't boot off a USB stick created by livecd-tools-024 with syslinux
(tested both versions 3.75 and 3.81).
The boot process drops to the "boot:" prompt with an error message:
could not find kernel image: linux
The same USB stick boots fine on any other computer I could find.

Install problems for a Toshiba NW24XCD
I am trying to install Centos on my old Portege 2490CT. Actually a
pretty good box, but it does not support USB booting. Only HDD, FDD
(interestingly a USB device), 'CD-Rom', or LAN.
The only CDroms I have is a nice USB drive and an old PCMCIA toshiba
NW24XCD drive.
I have not gotten this system to boot off of my USB CDrom. It will
boot of the NW24XCD.
So I put the CentOS disk 1 in the drive and boot. Boot seems to...
