Alternitives to Firefox...
...the problems? I just upgraded last week, and the STUPID MORONS made > the arrows in the scrollbars go away, had to search and find a gtk config > file I needed to create. That is one problem -- I want those arrows back. AND wider scrollbars (if that is possible -- skinny scrollbars might be fashonable, but are really hard to use). Another is the *lack* of a place to *type* a file name when you click a file upload button. The file upload browser both comes up too tall (taller than my screen [why?]) and lacks a place to start typing a file name, one *must* scroll down though (in my case) a long l...

new gstat version
Soon on CRAN a new version of package gstat will emerge, which has a few minor changes and possible incompatibilities w.r.t. the previous version(s). The new gstat (0.9-23) now: + depends on sp, and uses internally with Spatial* classes from sp if data are provided in the old-fashoned way (as data.frame) + has a vignette to get you started with the classes in sp + defines krige as a generic;

Sound & Vision codec comparison article
I just found this link on slashdot: http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/SoundAndVision/FrameSet/0,1670,_sl_SoundAndVision_sl_Article_sl_0_cm_1653_cm_130_2020_1_cm_00,00.html It is a Sept 1999 article describing some very detailed, double blind listening tests comparing PAC(Lucent), MP3(FhG) and MS audio at 128kbs. In typical microsoft fashon, MS audio is the clear looser despite all their hype.

Hey all, quick question: does asterisk work okay in a Cygwin environment? I want to install it on my cygwin setup for local testing/demoing and save me the hassle of using a pure linux machine........ As long as it doesn't take a huge huge performance hit from running out of Cygwin, then I'll have a go there for a start confirmation appreciated! thanks -- C h r i s E a r

Alternitives to Firefox...
OK, I recently ugraded to the current ESR release of Firefox for CentOS 6. And I am having problems with the user interface (basically it has become hard [for me] to use). What alternitives are there? (Chrome and Chromium are not possible with CentOS, and Chrome and Chromium are actually worse). -- Robert Heller -- 978-544-6933 Deepwoods Software -- Custom Software

Proposal: 'global' package refactoring
Looking over the contents of various packages, including my own, it is clear that lots of things end up 'hidden away' in packages where they don't belong. My gregmisc package is a particularly egregious example, containing something from almost every functional category. I propose that from time to time the R community go through the complete set of packages and 'refactor'
