Data loss bug - sidelined??
In August last year I posted this bug, a brief summary of which would be that ZFS still accepts writes to a faulted pool, causing data loss, and potentially silent data loss: http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6735932 There have been no updates to the bug since September, and nobody seems to be assigned to it. Can somebody let me know what''s happening with this

ZFS error handling - suggestion
Howdy, I have at several times had issues with consumer grade PC hardware and ZFS not getting along. The problem is not the disks but the fact I dont have ECC and end to end checking on the datapath. What is happening is that random memory errors and bit flips are written out to disk and when read back again ZFS reports it as a checksum failure: pool: myth state: ONLINE status: One or more

Big send/receive hangs on 2009.06
So, I was running my full backup last night, backing up my main data pool zp1, and it seems to have hung. Any suggestions for additional data gathering? -bash-3.2$ zpool status zp1 pool: zp1 state: ONLINE status: The pool is formatted using an older on-disk format. The pool can still be used, but some features are unavailable. action: Upgrade the pool using ''zpool

What happens when unmirrored ZIL log device is removed ungracefully
Due to recent experiences, and discussion on this list, my colleague and I performed some tests: Using solaris 10, fully upgraded. (zpool 15 is latest, which does not have log device removal that was introduced in zpool 19) In any way possible, you lose an unmirrored log device, and the OS will crash, and the whole zpool is permanently gone, even after reboots. Using opensolaris,

Replacing HDD in x4500
The vendor wanted to come in and replace an HDD in the 2nd X4500, as it was "constantly busy", and since our x4500 has always died miserably in the past when a HDD dies, they wanted to replace it before the HDD actually died. The usual was done, HDD replaced, resilvering started and ran for about 50 minutes. Then the system hung, same as always, all ZFS related commands would just

ZFS panics solaris while switching a volume to read-only
Hi, I just found out that ZFS triggers a kernel-panic while switching a mounted volume into read-only mode: The system is attached to a Symmetrix, all zfs-io goes through Powerpath: I ran some io-intensive stuff on /tank/foo and switched the device into read-only mode at the same time (symrdf -g bar failover -establish). ZFS went ''bam'' and triggered a Panic: WARNING: /pci at

help diagnosing system hang
...ling the application mentioned above, and I do see disk timeouts in dmesg. So, I can only assume that there''s either a driver bug in the SATA/SAS controller I''m using and it''s throwing timeouts, or the SSD is having issues. Looking at the zpool configuration, I see that failmode=wait, and since that SSD is the only member of the zpool I would expect IO to hang. But, does that mean that dmesg should hang also? Does that mean that the kernel has at least one thread stuck? Would failmode=continue be more desired, or resilient? During the hang, load-avg is artificially hig...

multipl disk failures cause zpool hang
Hi, There seems to be a few threads about zpool hang, do we have a workaround to resolve the hang issue without rebooting ? In my case, I have a pool with disks from external LUNs via a fiber cable. When the cable is unplugged while there is IO in the pool, All zpool related command hang (zpool status, zpool list, etc.), put the cable back does not solve the problem. Eventually, I

checksum errors after online''ing device
Dear all As we wanted to patch one of our iSCSI Solaris servers we had to offline the ZFS submirrors on the clients connected to that server. The devices connected to the second server stayed online so the pools on the clients were still available but in degraded mode. When the server came back up we onlined the devices on the clients an the resilver completed pretty quickly as the

Panic when ZFS pool goes down?
Is it still the case that there is a kernel panic if the device(s) with the ZFS pool die? I was thinking to attach some cheap SATA disks to a system to use for nearline storage. Then I could use ZFS send/recv on the local system (without ssh) to keep backups of the stuff in the main pool. The main pool is replicated across 2 arrays on the SAN and we have multipathing and it''s quite

Need Help Invalidating Uberblock
I have a ZFS pool that has been corrupted. The pool contains a single device which was actually a file on UFS. The machine was accidentally halted and now the pool is corrupt. There are (of course) no backups and I''ve been asked to recover the pool. The system panics when trying to do anything with the pool. root@:/$ zpool status panic[cpu1]/thread=fffffe8000758c80: assertion failed:

? Removing a disk from a ZFS Storage Pool
Hi my understanding is that you cannot remove a disk from a ZFS storage pool once you have added it...but I also think I saw an email from Jeff B saying that the ability to depopulate a disk so that it can be removed is being worked on....or was I dreaming ? What is the status of this ? Thanks Tim -- Signature Tim Thomas Staff Engineer Storage Systems Product Group

SUMMARY: mounting datasets from a read-only pool with aid of tmpfs
...rs) which I believe were in the zfs blocks with mismatching checksums, initially leading to the useless rpool. I replaced these files with those on the LiveUSB in the copy on "pool". Finally I exported and recreated rpool on the same device, and manually repopulated the zpool properties (failmode, bootfs) as well as initial values of zfs properties that I wanted (copies=2, dedup=off, compression=off). Then I used installgrub to ensure that the new rpool is bootable. I also set the zfs properties I wanted (i.e. copies=2, also canmount, mountpoint, caiman.* and others set by OpenIndiana, com...

ZFS Recovery: What do I try next?
I would like to pick the brains of the ZFS experts on this list: What would you do next to try and recover this zfs pool? I have a ZFS RAIDZ1 pool named bank0 that I cannot import. It was composed of 4 1.5 TiB disks. One disk is totally dead. Another had SMART errors, but using GNU ddrescue I was able to copy all the data off successfully. I have copied all 3 remaining disks as images using

ZFS on top of ZFS iSCSI share
I have a filer running Opensolaris (snv_111b) and I am presenting a iSCSI share from a RAIDZ pool. I want to run ZFS on the share at the client. Is it necessary to create a mirror or use ditto blocks at the client to ensure ZFS can recover if it detects a failure at the client? Thanks, Bruin

OpenSolaris ZFS NAS Setup
If it''s of interest, I''ve written up some articles on my experiences of building a ZFS NAS box which you can read here: http://breden.org.uk/2008/03/02/a-home-fileserver-using-zfs/ I used CIFS to share the filesystems, but it will be a simple matter to use NFS instead: issue the command ''zfs set sharenfs=on pool/filesystem'' instead of ''zfs set
