EnablePlainTextPassword for Win2K
...but failed 8-10 -- in
//doc/docs/textdocs/DIAGNOSIS.txt. Errors...
TEST 8
"System error 5 has occured. Access is denied."
TESTS 9 & 10
"The account is not authorized to log in from
this station."
I recall from a previous life that the solution
is to modify a registry key
(EnablePlainTextPassword or some such), but I
can't remember where the key resides, what the
appropriate values are, etc.
Any help appreciated...
Cheers,
-ian

Windows losing EnablePlainTextPassword settings after reboot
Hi,
We have been experiencing problems where workstations (Win2K SP3, latest updates) have their
registry setting for EnablePlainTextPassword set to 0 after reboot.
We have Samba 2.27 and a pilot of Samba 3.0
Could it be one of MSs sercurity updates ?
Has anyone seen this before ?
Any input would be welcome !
Thanks,

Windows98 & SMB
I have a question about Win98 and Samba. Is there a registry fix similar to
the WinNT plaintext passwd that needs to be performed? Win95, and WinNT can
see Linux via Netbios, but the same machine, running Win98 cannot see the
Linux box. I am running the most current version of Samba. The WinNT box
can see the 98 machine fine. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Please let me know if

PB upgrade to samba 2.0
...icate from clients (winnt4) to DigitalUnix3.2c with Samba
anymore. Before the upgrade it worked fine. After the upgrade, my
password is rejected.
It's really a authentication problem because it works fine if I add
"guest ok = yes".
On the server I have: security = share
On the client: EnablePlainTextPassword = 1
What's the matter ???

Windows 2000 patch for passwords
Hello, I'm a new subscriber and hope I don't break any rules.
We have just bought some new PC's pre-installed with Windows 2000. On
our previous installations (NT and 95/98) we applied the
EnablePlainTextPassword registry patch to allow our PCs to communicate
with our Unix server and other systems - no problem. Is there a similar
patch for Windows 2000? We can't communicate, and I assumed that the
same patch would work (the NT version anyway). But the same key doesn't
exist in my Windows 2000 reg...

password key in Windows XP
We are using SAMBA 2.2.4 to support a large community of Windows users. The
latest deployment of PC's come with Windows XP, and we need to disable
Password Encryption on those to use SAMBA. We need help in locating the
"EnablePlainTextPassword" key.
Thanks in advance

migrating to encrypted passwords
I have an old Samba network that uses unencrypted passwords. At the time,
the posts were running win95. These days they are running win98 for the
most part, but introducing new machines onto the network means fiddling
with the EnablePlainTextPassword registry key.
So currently, all the machines use plain-text passwords. I want to modify
them all to use encrypted passwords. Naturally, I want to do this as
easily (i.e., over a period of time) as possible.
I thought the [update encrypted] setting would help me, but obviously I
have misunderstood...

help for windows 98
...e unencrypted passwords because Windows 95 doesn't support them, so we
currently have clients with Windows 95 and clients with Windows NT 4.0
(with Service Pack installed), on which we have modified the Registry as:

Now it seems that Windows 98 won't support (as a default setting) the
unencrypted passwords, so every time we try to connect to Samba the
connection is refused because the password is wrong.
Do you know if it would be possible to edit Windows 98 Registry to overcome

Logging in from Win98
Hi.
Have FreeBSD and Samba 2.05a with
lots of Win95 rev 2 clients. With the
EnablePlainTextPassword=1 registry
setting on the Win95 boxes I my students
have been logging in fine.
We now have a few Win98 boxes I'd like to
connect, but I can't log in - I get refused
at the IPC$ share. I can log in if I use
rhosts, however I don't want to do this for
security reasons.
The key is in...

Windows 2000 and encrypted passwords
I have a mixed network of Win95, Win98 and Unix machines. I
am using Samba very happily. I would like to add a Windows
NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 client machine to the network, but
don't know how to turn off the password encryption. I am
currently editing the registry on the Win98 machines. If
someone can tell me how to edit the NT 4.0 and Win2000
registry I would appreciate it.
Thanks,

Win98 Password Stumbling Block (Resolution)
For those of you that have had/are having problems getting Win 98 clients to
correctly authenticate, I have identified a stumbling block which I had to
deal with. Specifically, EnablePlainTextPassword *must* be a DWORD value.
In following the instructions found here,
http://us1.samba.org/listproc/samba/October1998/0321.html and on the
Microtheft web site, I installed the ptxt_on.inf file from the Win 98 CD.
This created a Registry Entry that was binary rather than DWORD. Using
regedit, manually...

...oes not happen with Windows 98. The username an password gets pushed through.
What can I change in my Samba configuration to have this work for my Windows NT/2000 users so they do not have to enter a username and password for each mapping. I want it to look like the Win98 systems.
I do have "EnablePlainTextPassWord" set to 1 on both Win98 and Win2000 PC's.
Thanks in advance.

WinXP reghack wont stick after reboot
I have a handful of machines with all of the latest windows updates,
and the WinXP reghack wont stay.
If I enter the EnablePlainTextPassword reghack, and reboot, all is
fine, until the machine is logged off or rebooted, then it reverts
back to EnablePlainTextPassword=no
Seems to be only affected on machines using Novell 4.83.6 SP1
client... although something else could be the cause.
Machines with Novell 4.83.6 (no SP1) seem to work ok...

Samba Plain Password Patch
I cannot seem to find the plain password patch for the registry for NT4 or

Microsoft Windows Network : The local device name is already in use.
The connection has not been restored.
We can fix the problem by removing all mapped drives, reboot and remap.
We have to do this every day. I want to fix this problem.
In regedit we changed the enableplaintextpassword to the value of 1 to
get the connection.
I have searched the samba archive and internet with no success .
