UEFI boot manager sequence problems HP Envy
Morning all, I have a HP Envy dual boot system (Win8 for serious stuff, i.e. Train Sim and Flight Sim) and Centos 7 for everything else. In the past I've had the occasional problem where an update on the windows side has updated the UEFI boot sequence but using efibootmgr has always fixed it. On Friday I discovered that my HDD was failing so I tried using Clonezilla to move it on to a new SSD of the same size. Unfortunately the clone didn't work, failing half way through my main partition. Thankfully the Windows partitions and boot info cloned across so that...

HP Envy EFI problem after BIOS update
...CD: If I mount /dev/sda2 on /media and have a look, this is the valid EFI filesystem, including the Fedora and Centos entries. If I try to mount /dev/sda6 on /media it looks to be a valid /boot filesystem. If I mount /dev/sda6 as /boot and mount /dev/sda2 as /boot/efi before running Jim's efibootmgr command will I fix the problem or will I stuff it beyond all recognition? HP Envy EFI problem after BIOS update
Hi Jim, Thanks for this. I looked into what you said, and once happy I ran the command you gave. It appeared to work as it did not come up with any errors, and the output from efibootmgr showed 1) Centos had been added as an option and 2) it was the first in the boot sequence. However, when I rebooted the laptop went straight into Win8, and after rebooting back into KDE Live, the option is no longer there. This is the output after rebooting. [root at localhost liveuser]# efibo...

HP Envy EFI problem after BIOS update
...It was only after Fedora failed to boot that I realised that this was wrong. Some time ago I had replaced F21 with Centos 7 and the three Centos 7 options were the ones that should be available - plus the Windows 8 boot manager. I have managed to boot into a Centos 7 Live KDE image. In this ran efibootmgr which shows the same thing. I can fix the boot sequence, but that will not get me back the Centos entries. Can anyone suggest how I can do that? Gary [root at localhost ~]# efibootmgr BootCurrent: 0000 Timeout: 0 seconds BootOrder: 2002,0002,3002,0001,2001,2003 Boot0000* Internal CD/DVD ROM...

efibootmgr not working on xen-unstable booted on uefi system
I have installed dom0 Wheezy 64 bit on Dell PowerEdge T310 with kernel from package and xen-unstable. System is in Uefi mode and booted with grub-efi-amd64. Booting without xen efibootmgr works, while with xen not, efivars kernel module is loaded but show this message: efibootmgr Fatal: Couldn''t open either sysfs or procfs directories for accessing EFI variables. Try ''modprobe efivars'' as root. If you need some additional info please notify me, thanks for...

HP Envy EFI problem after BIOS update
...ra install, the current Centos install as well as the Windows install. When I chose the Centos install it showed the GRUB menu and booted into Centos without error. This confirms that the Centos entry in the EFI data is still valid. Once booted I then tried going through the process of running efibootmgr again. Once again, it looked to work perfectly, but for some reason the changes are not permenant, and if left alone, the laptop boots into Win8. I'm out of ideas now. Thanks. > Is this "ArchLinux" entry equivalent to "\EFI\syslinux\syslinux.efi" > in your UEFI firmware? > Note: UEFI firmware is supposed to use (or show) backslash "\" as path > separator. You have a great point there. I redid the "efibootmgr" installation and instead of efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sdd -p 1 -l EFI\\syslinux\\syslinux.efi -L ArchLinux as I used originally (as documented in my OP), I put a (double) slash in front of "EFI", i.e., I now have efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sdd -p 1 -l \\EFI\\syslinux\\syslinux.efi -L ......

What's the best way to get Syslinux to boot efi?
...ux#Setup_on_EFI_systems is my distribution instructions on installing Syslinux. http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php?title=Install#UEFI are your instructions. I have tried both instructions only to get a blank or black screen. Trying to make a bootable usb that will boot with efi so I can run efibootmgr. Just wondering which is correct, or should I uninstall gentoo's Syslinux, download it and compile it, and follow your website's instructions. Not having much luck in their forums.

update to Centos7.4: Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\grubx64.efi - Not Found
...ble. EM: Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\grubx64.efi - Not Found Failed to load image \EFI\BOOT\grubx64.efi: Not Found start_image() returned Not Found How could this occur because of an update and how to fix this? What I tried is booting from centos usb, chroot to /mnt/sysimage and gave command: efibootmgr --create --label CentOS --disk /dev/sda1 --loader "\EFI\centos\shim.efi" This gave no EM, but booting remains impossible. I have to say I don't know whether to try grub2 of efibootmgr commands. Any help would be very much appreciated. Greetings, J.

CentOS6: HELP! EFI boot fails after replacing disks...
...ms there is something in the UEFI (secure boot) logic that wants the original disk, even if everything is moved over. I ended up putting the original /dev/sda in. The machine boots and is using the new system disk (a raid array in degraded mode). What is the magic to fix this? I tried to run efibootmgr, but it wants a model named efivars loaded, but there is no such module available.
