Digital Ear evaluation of Vorbis beta 4
For those who haven't yet seen this: EarGuy's Digital Ear (physiological model of the ear based on work by Frank Baumgarte) has just finished rating the sound quality of Vorbis beta 4 at 128 kbs using 30 random 10-second selections of music: http://pub41.ezboard.com/fr3mixfrm4.showMessage?topicID=33.topic Two samples on which the Ear says Vorbis performed uncharacteristically poorly

replace parenthetical phrases in a string
R-helpers, I have a vector of character strings in which I would like to replace each parenthetical phrase with a single space, " ". For example if I start with x, I would like to end up with y. x <- c("My toast=bog(keep=3 no=4) and eggs(er34)omit=32", "dogs have ears", "cats have tails (and ears, too!)") y <- c("My toast=bog and eggs

space in column name
I read a table from Microsoft Access using RODBC. Some of the variables had a name with a space in it. R has no problem with it but I do. I cannot find out how to specify the space names(alltime) [1] "ID" "LVL7" "Ref Pv No" "Ref Pv Name" "DOS" "Pt Last Name" "Pt First Name" "MRN"

simple q: returning a logical vector of substring matches
I'm a relative R novice, and sometimes the simple things trip me up. Suppose I have a <- c("apple", "pear") and I want a logical vector of whether each of these strings contains "ear" (in this case, F T). What is the idiom? Quizzically, Mark Lindeman

FLAC: headphones
hi flac list! I'm not sure if this question can be asked here, but here you go (it's a question for audiophiles only): I encode CDDA tracks to FLAC and play them on my Pocket PC (PDA). I'm looking for a high quality headphone to connect to my Pocket PC, but it must be an in-ear one but not like these: http://s7d1.scene7.com/is/image/vanns/770045336?$medium_item$ So no plastic things

ruby help / if (cond or cond)
Why this code doesn''t work as expected? It raises exceptions everytime. Tried with || operator, too. validates_each :x, :y do |record, attr| record.errors.add (attr, ''between 1 and 100'') if (attr.to_i>100 or attr.to_i<0) end -- They say money can''t buy happiness? Illustrating kernel distribution in wheat ears
Dear all R2.10 WinXP I have a dataset dealing with the way different wheat cultivars build their yield. Wheat ears are organised in spikelets where the spikelets can be numbered from the bottom, with even numbers on one side and odd on the other. I know how many kernels there were in each spikelet after some months spent counting them... Now I want to illustrate the differences between the

Glusterfs/CTDB/Samba file locking problem
Hi guys, I try to set up two identical installed up to date CentOS6 machines with Glusterfs/CTDB/Samba . I have set up Glusterfs and it works. I have set up CTDB from CentOS and it seems to work too. Samba is AD integrated and works mainly. The main problem is that file locking seem to not work between the machines at all. If two Win7 clients try to open an document from the same Samba server

low pass filter frequency adjustable
Hi, recently I made some test with the opus tools (enc and dec) and I'm very (and positively) surprised about the resultant quality. But the only think that I miss is the ability to change the low pass filter frequency via "--lowpass" option or similar. For example at a quality or 96 kbps the cut off of the filter starts at 16Khz and is completely cut at 20 Khz. But in case of

no ring in ear
Hello. I have two snom200 ip phones and 1 mp108fxs (audiocodes 8 fxs) and i dont get a ring in the caller phone when I dial from a snom200 to the other snom200 or the mp108fxs, I made a debug with ethereal, and I can see a "Ringing" packet being return from the called snom200 or mp108fxs to the asterisk box, but it is not being re-transmitted to the caller snom200. Altough

Can compressed music sound better than uncompressed?
I quote from "Principles of Digital Audio" by Ken C. Pohlmann: "Because perceptual coders tailor the coded signal to the ear's acuity, they similarly tailor the required response of the playback system itself. Live music does not pass through amplifiers and loudspeakers, it goes directly to the ear. But recorded music must pass through the playback signal chain. Much of the

Why echo occurs
Hi all, Can someone give me a simple rational explanation why a $5 analog handset gives me no echo whatsoever on an analog PSTN line, but PSTN-VoIP devices such as the TDM400 and Sipuras do and thus require software-based echo cancellation. Surely a $5 analog handset does not have an "echo canceller". The echo I mean is when I hear myself while talking to another party. I have heard

Sluething
My Samba Server had a wild time this weekend thanks to alleged power fluctuations. I'm using Samba 3.x on Fedora 4. My server sits on an APC UPS that remains in good health. When I arrived this Monday I found that my MicroTik Router was still up. My Win XP pro AV server was off and my Fedora/SAMBA box was also off. (all boxes have their own 15min UPS) The Win XP pro was brought up w/out

Phone still rings while on a call
Hi All I have some grandstream phones registered to my asterisk and all internal, external, voicemail services etc are working very well. I am not sure that it is a problem more so an annoyance. If someone dials my extension number or external DDI while I am already in a call rather than skipping to the next priority in the dial plan for example voicemail the line continues to ring and while in

OH323 doesnt hear ringing
I have Asterisk running with a combination of SIP and H323 clients. I am using the OH323 module instead of the H323 one. When the SIP clients ring each other, they can hear a ringing noise in the ear peice to let them know that the other parties phone is ringing. However, when the H323 client rings a SIP client, there is no ringing sound at all, although as soon as the called party picks up the
