...instead of connecting to the share it displays the same generic error again, however this time with "The user name could not be found" on the end. Firstly, permissions are correctly set on the path of the shares. I've tripple cheked this then tripple checked again. $ ls -l /var/smb drwsrwsr-x 2 ittechs ittechs 4096 2008-04-30 09:28 ittechs drwsrwsr-x 2 msoffice msoffice 4096 2008-04-30 09:28 msoffice Both the ittechs and msoffice users have an smb password set, again I've checked and re-checked. $ cat /etc/samba/smbpasswd sysadmin:1000:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:B05CCCD45E8...

Force user
...ror.ac.uk/samba/docs/man/howto/AccessControls.html#id2541262). This has never worked for me. Files created inherit the group of the directory, but not the owner. I have even followed, line for line, the sequence on that page as follows: # chmod 6775 /foodbar $ ls -al /foodbar/.. You should see: drwsrwsr-x 2 jack engr 48 2003-02-04 09:55 foodbar # Now type: $ su - jill $ cd /foodbar $ touch Afile $ ls -al You should see that the file Afile created by Jill will have ownership and permissions of Jack, as follows: -rw-r--r-- 1 jack engr 0 2003-02-04 09:57 Afile That all works right up...

'inherit owner' doesn't play nice with 'force directory mode'
...e, I try to use 'force directory mode' or 'inherit permissions'. However, whenever I do that, the owner on the newly-created directory is no longer correct w/regard to 'inherit owner'. Is this correct behavior, or a bug? Here are details: The directory I'm sharing: drwsrwsr-t 2 nobody sambaguest 512 Aug 17 22:18 myshare My smb.config (well, the relevant part): # ... snip guest account = sambaguest # ... snip [myshare] comment = my share path = /path/to/myshare public = yes read only = no writable = yes browseable = yes printable = no inherit owner = ye...

Finding the UID of samba users
Hi Folks: I am in the process of moving all of our users over to our new Samba File server which runs FC3. In order to properly secure the home folders, I need to chown them to the UID of the individual user, and chgrp them to the domain users group. I know the GID for the domain users, so no problem there. Is there a way to find a list of the UID for all the users. I know that I can do it

some permissions issues
I?m facing some troubles with file / directory permissions... I log on the domain as admin user(root), and theres a pub share, on witch everyone needs to have permission to create / modify files, but when I change or create a file, only root can change the file, no one else. And then i need to go to server to chgrp users * -R and chown nobody * -R to allow others users to change the file.

Is winbindd required for Windows 7 clients
I'm having problems to et windows 7 clients running in my samba 3.4.2 PDC. They always load temporary profiles. WinXP clients are working perfectly. Is winbindd with an LDAP backend required for windows 7 clients? I didn't configure it because it was not necessary for winXP. regards robert -- GMX.at - ?sterreichs FreeMail-Dienst mit ?ber 2 Mio Mitgliedern E-Mail, SMS & mehr!
