SSSCA
This may not directly be a vorbis topic, but it could have some VERY serious implications for open source development. I read this morning on the doom9 site about the "Security Systems Standard and Certification Act." I not a lawyer so I'm just going by doom9's interpretation. Here's an excerpt from doom9: "Should it pass kiss your rights as a consumer by bye. As a side effect any open source software will effectively b...

WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE_CHANNEL_MASK is not described
An issue was raised at <http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1728923#post1728923> - FLAC uses WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE_CHANNEL_MASK tag to describe non-standard layout, but it isn't mentioned anywhere in FLAC format. Channel assignment is described at <https://xiph.org/flac/format.html#frame_header>: "Where defined, the ch...

codec review
An article was posted at www.slashdot.org on May 4th about another review of video codecs. The review can be found at: http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/codecs-103-1.htm Theora was not one of the seven codecs included in the review. I wonder how much of a window of opportunity exists before the industry stabilizes on a dominant, widely used video codec. The situation still seems to be fairly fluid. --- >8 ---- List archive...

AVI stream w/ AC3 5.1ch
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I have an AVI file (~900MB) that I want to convert to OGM format, with a ~ DivX 5 video and uncompressed AC3 (5.1ch) audio stream. Nandub doesn't want to compress the audio, so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a (Windows) tool to help. Thanks for your time! -Chris - -- "Everyone has to find their own reason." ~ -Cloud,

Speex: Open-source, patent-free speech coding
Hi, We would like to announce the first release of the Speex project. Speex (http://speex.sourceforge.net) is an open-source (LGPL), patent-free compression format allowing an alternative to expensive proprietary codecs. Unlike Ogg Vorbis which compresses general audio, Speex is designed especially for speech. For that reason, Speex is meant to be a complement to Vorbis. Since it is specialized

Audio/video synchronization in ogm files
Hi! I made an ogm file with ogg audio and divX video. When I play it, sound and movie are not well synchronous (I played it with WMP and ashampoo). What can I do? NB: I know that this problem does not come from the audio and the divX video files, since when I make a mp3/divX avi file, it works. Sincerely, Frédéric. --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project

Does Ogg Vorbis support 5.1 surround?
Hello everyone! Please bear with me, I am a complete audio-newbie, and I apologise if I am asking a question that I should know. As most of you all know, DVD's have 5.1 audio, and I want to preserve that in my voribs files. So, to ask the question : Does it support Surround sound? Thank you very much!

Current state of theora & Windows port?
Hello everyone, I'm developing software for a marketing company which creates multimedia presentations. We're currently using proprietary Windows software, but are looking for a royalty-free cross-platform solution. It's important that the solution is royalty- and patent-free because the presentations are copied and given out in large quantities for free (as in beer ;-) We are

Using large-scale repetition in audio compression
This idea is so simple that I'm sure it must have been thought of before, and discarded, since AFAIK it's not used anywhere. I did a quick web search but that didn't turn up much, so I figured I'd put it up for discussion here anyway. How about using large-scale repetition in audio compression? I'm thinking of redundancy in repeated pieces of a song, ie a chorus.

NHW codec
Hello, I would like to discuss a little about the NHW codec and its state after nearly 5 years on the Xiph forums. I also know that if I would like to discuss I'd better go to the great Doom9 and Encode.ru forums but for now I find that my codec is too experimental for these professional forums: - the codec is only for fixed 512x512 size, just a test tool. - there is only mid compression - for high compression, all the quantization scheme must be redesigned - all the compression scheme...

NHW Project - A new release?
...o finalyze all the current quality settings and add a -l8 high compression setting, and I am not far from it, all the quality settings are nearly validated if not final, and then release a new version. With this new version, I would like to extend my search area, and present the NHW Project on the Doom9, encode.ru and embedded processors forums.I will still continue to post my "daily" updates on the Xiph Theora channel if I am not boring you... What I fear with the other forums, is for example that people tell me that my project is too amateur because it is restricted to fixed 512x512 i...

Vorbis in DivX
Hello all Could you please tell me if and how Vorbis is used for the audio in DivX? Is it still encapsulated within ogg container format in DivX or does DivX contain raw Vorbis encoded packets? Any clues or pointers would be helpful. Thanks & regards ~previr

OggVDS Where?
Where can I download the Ogg Vorbis DirectShow Filter? I've heard, that there is a newer version than 0.9.9.5. There's a bug in either OggMux or Tobias' Filter which causes text to be erased after special (unicode?) characters in the chapter list.
