Open Letter to DOJ re Microsoft Settlement
...ices. I've drafted an open letter to the Department of Justice to explain why the proposed settlement should not be accepted; it's at http://www.kegel.com/remedy/letter.html I'd be honored if you would read it, and consider signing it with me, or submitting your own comment to the DOJ. Either way, the federal deadline for public comment is Monday the 28th. For more information, see http://www.kegel.com/remedy/ See also Jeremy White's page http://www.codeweavers.com/~jwhite/tunney.html Sincerely, Dan Kegel

Microsoft hotfix MS04-011, breaks Samba password change.
...eleasing a 2.2.9 for all the people who are satisfied with Samba 2.2.8a and don't want to move to 3.0.x yet. I'm also very unhappy with Microsoft for releasing improperly tested hotfixes, but that's another story I'll probably be taking up with the Technical Comittee overseeing the DoJ Microsoft settlement and the EU as well. Cheers, Jeremy.

COURT solicited comments!: Was: Analysis of the Microsoft Settlement from a Samba perspective.
Jeremy: Just wanted to pass this snippet I saw from slashdot http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/11/07/053230 which says: Public Comment Period In MS/DOJ Battle Posted by timothy on Wednesday November 07, @07:03AM from the tap-your-mind dept. Analysis of the Microsoft Settlement from a Samba perspective.
...d allow Microsoft to ensure the security of its products, whilst still being forced to fully disclose the fundamental protocols that are needed to create interoperable products. The holes in this document are large enough for any competent lawyer to drive several large trucks through. I assume the DoJ lawyers didn't get any technical advice on this settlement as the exceptions are cleverly worded to allow Microsoft to attempt to evade any restrictions in previous parts of the document. Microsoft has very competent lawyers, as this weakly worded settlement by the DoJ shows. It is to be hoped...

Multichannel Encoding
I'm a mathematician and programmer working on experimental surround sound techniques. Some of the ideas I'm working on require dozens of channels. These channels are often highly correlated and are very well suited to compression. I'm new to Vorbis. Does it attempt to address such issues? Microsoft Antitrust Remedy proposal, take 3
...s response to the States was enlightening; it pointed out the parts of the Court of Appeals ruling that need to be heeded when fashioning a remedy. I now feel that the States' proposal has little chance of being accepted by the judge. The Proposed Final Judgment negotiated by Microsoft and the DOJ is probably the right starting point for any new proposals. Accordingly, I've started over, and this time I'm sticking very close to the negotiated settlement, and paying close attention to the law. As before, you can read my proposals at http://www.kegel.com/remedy.html I'm...

Re: ogg vorbis
Sure. However, I don't believe e-mail is an effective tool to make change, since much of the stuff that gets sent about things like this, either look like fanatics that won't take no for an answer, or people that demand their right to something which a company can't guarantee or has no obligation to provide. Most of the time, e-mail ends up sounding like a flame fest which isn't

I hate MS as much as you do, but I have realized that they control everything, and we are going to have to live with it. I don't think anyone or thing can ever fight them. Hell, Bill snubbs his nose at the US DOJ. You are preaching to the choir. I work in an environment where interns think that MS wrote C & C++. They have never been exposed to anything else. I use every opportunity to bash MS and correct ignorance. The problem I have is that I don't want to see the negative attitude impact a gre...

Freelance Rate
Hi, Not sure where to address this question ... but I guess this is a good start. I am a freelance Rails developer - and have been developing Rails apps professionally for about a year now. I just want to get an idea of what you other freelancers charge yourselves out at. I have been charging the equivalent of about $28/hour, but get a sense that I could/should charge a whole lot more. SMB gurus: please help - I am desperate.
I apologize up front for re-posting this, but I need to find a solution to this problem. I have been having hard time to believe that there isn't one person among the SMB gurus that doesn't know how a W2K client connects to an SMB server. So, if you happen to know even the slightest hint to this baffling problem, I would be forever grateful. OK. Here goes (original subject line was:

Serious bug in Samba 3.0.2pre1 !!!
Summarization of the bug in Samba 3.0.2pre1: It seems that an ADS group is not valid or detected anymore to access a samba share, in case only an ADS group is used a valid user on a Samba share, because Kerberos is reporting: Username (null) is invalid on this system. Besides that, connecting to a share (service) reports with Samba 3.0.0-2 REALM\username (NH-TEST.NL\fo6), but with Samba 3.0.2pre1

WARNING: Break-in attempts
Greetings all, I''m forwarding a copy of an email I sent reporting attempted break-ins on my main server, earth.terran.org. I am forwarding this because I think it is relevant that folks watch for this kind of activity in their logs to catch people who "try doorknobs" in the middle of the night. After sending this email, I sent a talk request to the user, who was still logged
