virsh troubling zfs!?
Hi and hello, I have a problem confusing me. I hope someone can help me with it. I followed a "best practise" - I think - using dedicated zfs filesystems for my virtual machines. Commands (for completion): zfs create rpool/vms zfs create rpool/vms/vm1 zfs create -V 10G rpool/vms/vm1/vm1-dsk This command creates the file system /rpool/vms/vm1/vm1-dsk and the

simulating a few thousand SIP clients?
hi i'm setting up a rig to handle quite a few SIP clients, so i need a way to simulate, say, 20k SIP ATAs. Does anyone know how? This should of course be as close as possible to 'reality', meaning n% calls per client and the usual REGISTER/OPTION traffic. thanks Best regards Roy Sigurd Karlsbakk roy@karlsbakk.net --- In space, loud sounds, like explosions, are even louder

compression=on and zpool attach
I''ve got 12Gb or so of db+web in a zone on a ZFS filesystem on a mirrored zpool. Noticed during some performance testing today that its i/o bound but using hardly any CPU, so I thought turning on compression would be a quick win. I know I''ll have to copy files for existing data to be compressed, so I was going to make a new filesystem, enable compression and rysnc everything in,

Testing IP Instances in 62 on vmware
The network fails for the zone when i try to setup it with ip-type exclusive. Its on a vmware server 1.0.2 using a emulated e1000g, this is the only current way i have got to test it with :( Any ideas on how to find out what the problem is? Is it that the emulation done by vmware can''t do this? I think it would be useful for this to work in vmware, as you can add many virtual nics to

No zfs_nocacheflush in Solaris 10?
Hi, I''m running SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic_118855-36 64-bit and in /etc/system I put: set zfs:zfs_nocacheflush = 1 And after rebooting, I get the message: sorry, variable ''zfs_nocacheflush'' is not defined in the ''zfs'' module So is this variable not available in the Solaris kernel? I''m getting really poor

restore lost pool after vtoc re-label
hi all, i''ve been using a SAN LUN as the sole member of a zpool with one additional zfs filesystem. this is a flat SAN fabric, so this LUN was available to other systems on the fabric, and one of them came up with "wrong magic number" for several drives, and, as best i can tell, the vtoc for my zpool LUN was over-written on that host via format labeling to correct the error.

ZFS Automatic Device Error Notification?
Okay, so now that I''m planning to build my NAS using ZFS, I now need to devise or learn of a preexisting method to receive notification of ZFS handled errors on a remote machine. For example, if a disk fails and I don''t regularly login or SSH into the ZFS server, I''d like an email or some other notification immediately of the ZFS event. Are there already ways to do

ZFS + Raid-Z pool size incorrect?
I''m seeing odd behaviour when I create a ZFS raidz pool using three disks. The output of "zpool status" shows the pool size as the size of the three disks combined (as if it were a Raid 0 volume). This isn''t expected behaviour is it? When I create a mirrored volume in ZFS everything is as one would expect the pool is the size of a single drive. My setup: Compaq

reproducible zfs panic on Solaris 10 06/06
Hi, I am able to reproduce the following panic on a number of Solaris 10 06/06 boxes (Sun Blade 150, V210 and T2000). The script to do this is: #!/bin/sh -x uname -a mkfile 100m /data zpool create tank /data zpool status cd /tank ls -al cp /etc/services . ls -al cd / rm /data zpool status # uncomment the following lines if you want to see the system think # it can still read and write to the

Rule of Thumb for zfs server sizing with (192) 500 GB SATA disks?
I''m trying to get maybe 200 MB/sec over NFS for large movie files (need large capacity to hold all of them). Are there any rules of thumb on how much RAM is needed to handle this (probably RAIDZ for all the disks) with zfs, and how large a server should be used? The throughput required is not so large, so I am thinking an X4100 M2 or X4150 should be plenty. This message posted from

At what level does the “zfs” directory exist?
I?ve posted a query regarding the visibility of snapshots via CIFS here (http://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=130577&tstart=0) however, I?m beginning to suspect that it may be a more fundamental ZFS question so I?m asking the same question here. At what level does the ?zfs? directory exist? If the ?.zfs? subdirectory only exists as the direct child of the mount point then can

Hardware RAID vs. ZFS RAID
Hello, I have a Dell 2950 with a Perc 5/i, two 300GB 15K SAS drives in a RAID0 array. I am considering going to ZFS and I would like to get some feedback about which situation would yield the highest performance: using the Perc 5/i to provide a hardware RAID0 that is presented as a single volume to OpenSolaris, or using the drives separately and creating the RAID0 with OpenSolaris and ZFS? Or

Cheap ZFS homeserver.
So after toying around with some stuff a few months back I got bogged down and set this project aside for a while. Time to revisit.

Looking around there still is not a good "these cards/motherboards" work list. the HCL is hardly ever updated, and its far more geared towards business use than hobbyist/home use. So bearing all of that in mind I will need the

Proposal: multiple copies of user data
Here is a proposal for a new ''copies'' property which would allow different levels of replication for different filesystems. Your comments are appreciated! --matt A. INTRODUCTION ZFS stores multiple copies of all metadata. This is accomplished by storing up to three DVAs (Disk Virtual Addresses) in each block pointer. This feature is known as "Ditto Blocks". When

ZFS Hardware Check, OS X Compatibility, NEWBIE!!
This is my first post here, and i hope it is ok that i posted in this thread. I have been doing a bit of reading on the solaris platforms, and seem to be inclined to try out the open solaris os or solaris 10. My only worry is that my lack of knowledge with the command line may make this difficult regarding trouble shooting. It seems fairly straighforward creating zpools etc, but maybe nexenta is

A couple of issues
I''ve been testing ZFS since it came out on b27 and this week I BFUed to b30. I''ve seen two problems, one I''ll call minor and the other major. The hardware is a Dell PowerEdge 2600 with 2 3.2GHz Xeons, 2GB memory and a perc3 controller. I have created a filesystem for over 1000 users on it and take hourly snapshots, which destroy the one from 24 hours ago, except the
