new CentOS 5 as DNS server
Hi folks,
As a breather from the
"thread-now-wider-than-my-headers-window-in-thunderbird" conversation
re: mixing repos, I have a question regarding a machine I'm about to put
online. :)
I run a web hosting company and my secondary (primary to the world) DNS
box died from a massive rootkit/hack last night. It was running an old
Slackware 9.1 installation and I will be completely

rspec 1.1.99.12, Rails 2.3.1, undefined method `rspec_options=''
Hi David, all:
I recently upgraded to Rails 2.3.1RC2 (Ubuntu 8.10, ruby 1.8.7
(2008-08-11 patchlevel 72) [i486-linux]) and have been dilligently
following the instructions for upgrading rspec and rspec-rails
according to: http://wiki.github.com/dchelimsky/rspec/rails-with-rspec-gems.
and when I run ''rake gem'' fails with error:

3.0.4 on Solaris 8 - fcntl(F_SETLK64)
We upgraded from 2.2.5 to 3.0.4 last week and ever since have been running
into a deadlock condition that causes clients to hang for extended
periods; all trying to get a write lock on locking.tdb. I have been
dilligently googling to find the solution and have thus far been
unsuccessful. My kernel rev is 108528-29, so I think I'm ok there. Does
anyone have any ideas?

de-essing into speex?
are there plans to add "de-essing" as part of the speexenc procedure,
to make it possible to use lower quality compression without getting
those horrible computer-like "ess" sounds in the finished result?
like if you say "someone said the sun is shining", there is a lot of
ess sounds, and these will sound "computer-ish" at vbr qualities below
9.

I don't mean to be rude but what bit rate is windows media encoder
encoding at and what encoder (type) are you using... Unless its low
(32kbps-8kbps) it doesn't compare to speex (spx).

other encoders?
...other type of audio encoding utility *other than*
LAME?
2) If so, how compatible have you found it to be with your streaming
utilities, i.e. ices, liveice-ng, darkice, etc?
3) What other platforms have you been able to run these utilities
successfully?
I am not planning on migrating, but doing due dilligence to convince
management that we need to stay on Linux. I am keeping an open mind and
would like to know how well other utilities work on various platforms.
Thanks.

win2ksp2 "cannot load profile" from a --with-ldapsam domain controller
Apologies if this is well hashed-over, but I searched pretty dilligently
on the web and mailing list archive and couldn't find the answer. I even
stumped my resident samba guru (hi Sean).
Server is Red Hat 7.3. Tried with both the Red Hat 7.3 rpm just recompiled
--with-ldapsam as well as the samba.org src.rpm also recompiled with
--with-ldapsam. Things work for the most part, people are

Sorry, i must be more careful if i proposed patches.

[LLVMdev] Propose change gnuplot options for small picture versions
In current state dates at small version of pictures generated by night
builder script is unreadable
( for example http://llvm.cs.uiuc.edu/testresults/X86/running_loc.png ).
I suggest rotate it to vertical position in small picture versions.
.png file created modified gnuplot script (for comparing) and patch
attached.
"set xlabel 0,-1 " added for solving xlabel and xtics text overlap

thanks for getting back to me,
i have uploaded a zip file containing some sound files that
demonstrates the issue.
http://www.bogus.net/~olav/ess.zip
this contains
s.mp3 original wav file (mono) converted to top-quality mp3 (370K)
s.wma windows media encoder with 19khz voice compression ( 62K)
s-2.spx speexenc --vbr --quality 2 on the wav file ( 63K)

Dovecot/MSQL issue
...over TCP to mysql
(not using the socket), and the issue looked like the cause was the
identified by portion of mysql being read by either mysql incorrectly or
the domain portion being overwritten on dovecot's end (I don't know about
the internals enough to say for sure where).
Just as due dilligence, I added credentials for a mysql user identified by
localhost and removed the jail since the dovecot error was stating that it
failed for connection by user@'localhost' (where there weren't credentials).
After adding the credentials, I performed all the usual mysql tests before

Asterisk Referral - Cleanup on Aisle 7
Just got a call from a company in Warren, MI . They recently had an
Asterisk system put in by a vendor, and are having issues which need
analysis and correction. They have a tremendous sense of urgency. They
have about (40) users, and need DID's assigned to extensions and are having
some echo issues at the site. If anyone is in the Warren, MI area, and is
interested in some cavalry work,

weighted likelihood for lme
Dear R users,
I'm trying to fit a simple random intercept model with a fixed intercept.
Suppose I want to assign a weight w_i to the i-th contribute to the log-likelihood, i.e.
w_i * logLik_i
where logLik_i is the log-likelihood for the i-th subject.
I want to maximize the likelihood for N subjects
Sum_i {w_i * logLik_i}
Here is a simple example to reproduce

Regarding Trademark Dispute.
...ontained in the message
is that statement that SSH Communications did not exert their
trademark rights earlier becuase it's only recently that
OpenSSH has become more visible.
In the United States, this would invalidate the trademark because
the US requires that a trademark holder exercise due dilligence
in protecting the mark -- and that due dilligence has always been
intrepretted as notifying infringers immediately of the infringment
and making an claim if the infringement is not stopped. Any lapse
in exercising the rights is interpretted, under US Law, as an
abandonment of the mark.

de-essing into speex?
Hi,
I think I see what you mean, though I haven't been able to listen to
your wma file (not everyone has a wma decoder). The problem probably
only lies in the VBR tuning for wideband which hasn't received much work
yet. One way to check that is to encode in constant bit-rate and see
what the results are. I'm pretty sure you'll notice the problem appears
only at (CBR) quality 5 or

puppet way of handling rdist and triggers
We have an existing "management system" of sorts, based on rdist. I''d like
to know the best way to migrate it to using puppet.
Currently, we have a local binaries tree, rdisted out nightly. We also
make use of rdist''s extra capability to trigger scripts when and if named
files are updated.
I''m not sure what the best method would be, of converting this to

Managing the spiralling costs
I have been using the inbound 800 services from vitelity. Slowly the
usage has been rising and in the month of Jan the bill was for $650. I
am currently on a 1.9 cents a minute plan. Am I paying too much ?
Some suggestions my team generated to reduce the toll free incoming
call bill were:
1. When people call in on the 800 number take the local number they
are calling from and then call them back

SU vs. ssh root@host
All--
su cannot be run without trusting the shell. The shell cannot be
trusted without trusting any instructions the shell uses, from library calls
to rc scripts. Hell, the instructions the shell uses can't even be trusted,
since they're all living in userspace memory.
By contrast, SSHD is generally a root owned, highly secure environment
with no unpriveledged userspace
