Compatibility of Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 HDS723030ALA640 with ZFS
Greetings, Quick question: I am about to acquire some disks for use with ZFS (currently using zfs-fuse v0.7.0). I''m aware of some 4k alignment issues with Western Digital advanced format disks. As far as I can tell, the Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 (HDS723030ALA640) uses 512B sectors and so I presume does not suffer from such issues (because it doesn''t lie about the physical layout of sectors on-platter) Can someone confirm this or point out any other known issues with the disks? I will be using the disks raw, unpartitioned....

Replacement disks for Sun X4500
I am bumping this thread because I too have the same question ... can I put modern 3TB disks (hitachi deskstars) into an old x4500 ? If not, would the x4540 accept them ? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

Ext3 Journal corruption on hitachi deskstars
...el or amd have VIA IDE chipsets. They frequently experience corrupted journals rendering the ext3 partition in read-only mode. More important than recovering the filesystem, I am interested in finding the root of the problem. The common hardware that all of these machines share is a Hitachi deskstar drive (New IBM drive)... Searching through the mailing list and google I have seen references to problems with this particular drive but for the life of me and (the broken redhat search tool) I cannot pin down specific information on the cause of these failures. A bug within the IDE bus dri...

Help with smbmount Please
Hey I am attempting to use linux to connect to my win98 computer that is sharing 2 drives. I have tried to use smbmount to mount either drive, but to no avail. The syntax I used was (smbmount file://WIRED/DESKSTAR /mnt/server -I 100.100.100.1). It will get to the prompt that asks for your password, but after that it comes up with an error. The error says ( mount error: Invalid argument). The syntax looks correct to me! I'm running RedHat 5.2 kernel 2.2.5 and Samba 2.0.3. Any help would be much apprec...

Really high load average. Config problem?
helo I am running samba on an 800 Duron / 640MB PC2100 DDR Ram / 40 GB IBM Deskstar with slackware 8 / 2.2.17 Optimized for Duron. Whenever I copy files to the server, my load average gets to be about 6.0-8.0! On the 700 Duron we have at the office where I work, (same specs except it has 768MB of SDRAM and a RAID Array). Would the reason my box runs so slow be because its swap...

Hard disk recomendation for a software raid 5 array. Does Linux Software Raid support/interacts well with TLER enabled disks.
Hi people, I am building a cheap remote rsync backup server using a software raid 5 array of 4 500GB disks. What I have available on the market is: 1. HITACHI GST Deskstar T7K500 500GB 7200rpm 16MB cache Serial ATA II-300 2. SEAGATE Barracuda 7200.10 with NCQ 500GB 7200rpm 16MB cache Serial ATA II-300 3. Western Digital 500GB SATAII RAID EDITION Caviar SE16 7200rpm 8.9ms 16MB cache I am tempted to use the Western Digital Raid Edition as it has 5 years of warranty....

Raid Edition drive with RAIDZ
Since ZFS already has error correction, would drives that limit the time a hard drive attempts to recover from errors such as WD RE drives or Seagate ES drive be necessary? Would it be safe to use standard hard drives without the Time Limited Error Recovery feature in a RAIDZ array? This message posted from opensolaris.org

read-only file system when trying to save files
I have installed emacs with yum and now I'm trying to create a .emacs file and put some commands in it, but I can't type anything in the emacs buffer. It says the buffer is read-only. I exited emacs and did touch .emacs and I get a message that it can't do that on a read-only file system. I googled around to see why this might be, but I can't see any links on this. Any tips why

G4-400mhz enough for CentOS 4.3?
It's that time again. I'm stuck with a bunch of older Powermac G4's that I either need to repurpose or give the heave ho. I've not tried CentOS on Mac hardware before. Would the following config be suitable for a (somewhat slow) workstation? PowerMac G4 400mhz 256mb RAM 40gig ATA disk Some sort of dual-head ATI video setup with 64mb VRAM (I've forgotten which cards they
