'media laws' were passed. So how could there have been any kind of fair
representation? Congress passed the DMCA much much too quickly, and we
are seeing the fallout of this premature and awful law now.

I will say something is really whacked with the DMCA though in the DeCSS

reverse engineer and then reinvent software if the purpose is to provide
support for some media or device on a platform that currently lacks that
support. I don't see how, having demonstrated that clause, the MPAA h...

The rates are in arbitration, and I doubt they will come out anywhere
near that amount. It just isn't feasible, even for large companies.

YAPQ (Yet Another Patent Question)
Looks like the mpeg gestapo are frantically at work cracking down on mpeg
projects. Several important projects (tsunami mpeg, gogo, faac, etc) were
shut down by the jack booted patent nazis.
Since FhG, mpegla, etc plan to start charging royalties on
everything even remotely mpeg-related very soon, I expect a lot of
interest is going to shift to Vorbis.
And soon thereafter, I expect FhG to attack

Presently, the scope appears to be very restricted: The article
points out that the DeCSS decision would probably not be affected
in any way. In the current environment, this is probably true. But
