please test: Secure ports tree updating
...r day, but after
this has had some testing I'll increase that to once every 1-2
hours. Similarly, portsnap isn't in the ports tree yet, but it
will appear there once I'm satisfied with the testing that it
has received.
So please go and test! Portsnap can be downloaded from
http://www.daemonology.net/portsnap/

PS. I'm not sure how many testers this message is going to elicit,
nor how much bandwidth portsnap.daemonology.net can comfortably
handle. I may come back tomorrow and ask for some mirrors. :-)

Security updates
Hallo.
I am new to FreeBSD and i wanted to ask something since systems security is
what interests me the most.
Does freebsd have an automated update system like redhat has ?
Also where can i find a list with patches for all local - remote holes and
bugs of FreeBSD 4.9 ?
Thank you very much for your time !
Best Regards

Binary updates for FreeBSD 5.x
...te. This has taken rather longer than I expected -- I thought
I would be at this point in mid-November -- but porting the update-building
code to run on FreeBSD 5.x took rather longer than I expected. For details
about how to use these updates, please see the FreeBSD Update web site at
http://www.daemonology.net/freebsd-update/
A couple notes are in order: First, I am not a FreeBSD committer, and
FreeBSD Update is in no way endorsed by the FreeBSD Project or the Security
Officer; this is something I'm providing on my own and you should only use
these updates if you're willing to trust your...

OpenSSH and CBC
Hi Gerhard,
This is not exactly true. CTR modes have the length field encrypted. etm
MAC modes and AES-GCM have the length field in cleartext.
CBC is dangerous because the length field is encrypted with CBC.
aes128-ctr + hmac-sha256 doesn't have any known vulnerability and
encrypts the packet length, but uses the bad practice of e&m.
chacha20-poly1305 encrypts both payload and packet

Freebsd-update and 6.1-RELEASE
Hi guys,
Does anybody know if freebsd-update is going to be available for
6.1-RELEASE before the end of Colin's "summer of FreeBSD work"?
I wouldn't like to bother Colin directly via e-mail, so if anyone
already asked for this or something....
Thanx, regards

Heads up: End of RELENG_4_8 support
At the end of March, the RELENG_4_8 (sometimes called 4.8-SECURITY)
branch will reach its designated End of Life and cease to be supported
by the FreeBSD Security Team.
Released in April 2003, FreeBSD 4.8 was the first release designated
for "extended" two-year security support instead of the normal one-year
support. Over this time, 27 security advisories have been issued which
