special latin1 do not print as glyphs in current devel on windows
Upon further inspection, I think these are at least two problems. First the issue with printing latin1/cp1252 characters in the "80" to "9F" code range. x <- c("?", "?", "?") Encoding(x) print(x) I assume that these are Unicode escapes!? (Given that Encoding(x) shows "latin1" I'd rather expect latin1/cp1252 escapes here, but these would b...

special latin1 do not print as glyphs in current devel on windows
You seem confused about Latin-1: those characters are not in Latin-1. (MicroSoft code pages are a proprietary encoding, some code pages such as CP1252 being extensions to Latin-1.) You have not given the 'at a minimum information' asked for in the posting guide so we have no way to reproduce this, and without showing us the output on your system, we have no idea what you saw. [As a convenience to Windows users, R does in some cases as...

special latin1 do not print as glyphs in current devel on windows
...initial posts were quite chaotic (and partly wrong), so I am trying to clear things up a bit. Actually, the title of my original message "special latin1 [characters] do not print as glyphs in current devel on windows" is already wrong, because the problem exists with characters with CP1252 encoding in the 80-9F (hex) range. Like Brian Ripley rightfully pointed out, latin1 != CP1252. The characters in the 80-9F code point range are not even part of ISO/IEC 8859-1 a.k.a. latin1, see for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows-1252. R treats them as if they were, however, and...

special latin1 do not print as glyphs in current devel on windows
Thank you!. My apologies again for not including the console output in my message before. I sent another e-mail with the output in the meantime, so it should be a bit clearer now, what I am seeing. In case I missed something, please let me know. Yes, I am using latin1 and cp1252 interchangebly here, mostly because Encoding() is reporting the encoding as "latin1". You presumed correctly that my current/default locale's encoding is CP1252. (I also mentioned that my locale is LC_COLLATE=German_Germany.1252 before). As you are changing encodings, you do not wan...

...ux box I set up codepage ISO8859-15 or fr_FR@euro locale. On Samba: - I let "client code page = 850"; - I set "character set = ISO8859-15"; - I let "valid chars = ", I tryed to pass different values to enable accented characters nothing works. I checked values between cp1252 and ISO8859-15. If both, are based on Unicode there is some differences between cp1252 and ISO8859-15 entries. For example, 'Euro sign' (Unicode 0x20AC) have a cp1252 value 0x80 and an ISO8859-15 value 0xA4. Result is from Win98 to Samba, 'Euro sign' (0x80) turn to a 'control/u...

Problem with new version of R: Mutated vocals
Dear ladies and gentlemen, I have recently installed the latest version of R (4.3.3) for windows. Now I have the following problems with mutated vowels like ?, ?, etc. Here is an example: If I type the command: Dir <- "C/Users/macho/Documents/_LVn/Experimentelle ?bungen" in the R console there is no problem. However, if I put the same command into a source file (e.g. Test.r) and call

hivex: some issues (key encoding, ...) and suggested fixes

However we do need to nul-terminate * the string. */ I think hivex should convert the node names from CP1252 (or is it ISO-8859-1?) to UTF-8. Workaround: I do the CP1252 -> UTF8 conversion myself for now 3. node_get_child is slow Documentation issue, it should say that using node_get_child is slow (because registry doesn't have an index, and you do a linear search). Workaround: I create a map o...

Set encoding when load()-ing workspaces?
...cter data in a workspace will be in a particular encoding that is not recorded in the workspace, so workspaces containing non-ASCII character data may not be interchangeable even on the same OS. Since R marks character data when it knows it to be in UTF-8 or Latin-1 (including its Windows superset, CP1252), strings in those encodings are likely to be transferred correctly: fortunately this covers most of the common cases (Mac OS X normally uses UTF-8, and Linux users are likely to use UTF-8 or perhaps Latin-1 (which used to be used for English)). " Apparently, my case is not the most common on...

Possible Bug: file.exists() Function. Due to UTF-8 Encoding differences on Windows between R 4.0.1 and R 3.6.3?
...e names. If one wants to be safe, it makes sense to be much stricter than that (only ASCII, and only a subset of it, there is a number of recommendations that can be found online). Using more than that is asking for trouble. Unicode "\u00e4" is a Latin-1 character, so representable in CP1252. On my Windows running in CP1252 as C locale and system code page, your example works fine, file.exists() returns TRUE, and this is the expected behavior (tested in R-devel and R4.0). Your example was run in CP1252 as C locale but CP936 as the system code page (see the sessionInfo() output). O...

Possible Bug: file.exists() Function. Due to UTF-8 Encoding differences on Windows between R 4.0.1 and R 3.6.3?
Hi Tomas, I received a report about R 4.0.0 in the knitr package (https://github.com/yihui/knitr/issues/1840), and I think it is related to the issue here. I created a minimal reproducible example below: owd = setwd(tempdir()) z = 'K\u00e4sch.txt' file.create(z) list.files() file.exists(list.files()) setwd(owd) Output: > owd = setwd(tempdir()) > z = 'K\u00e4sch.txt' >

iconv documentation error
This caught us yesterday when a string that we assumed to be in UTF-8 was actually using CP1252. (This came from an internal web based service, so the root cause is not R's fault.) The help page for iconv states that the result of an invalid conversion is NA only when the toRaw argument is TRUE, but this appears to be true in general. Example: test1 <- "M?ni?re's disease...

Rsync with special characters
