Hanging @ Sendmail During Boot
Hi All, I have a coupla queries about my 2 latest installs of CentOS 4-3. When I first installed and logged in as the initial user, everything went well, and the system was fast. A reboot, and 2nd login gave the same. But, upon connecting to the net, the system hung at sendmail for almost 4mins, and then gave an error...

Blocking and compression.
...scribed to this list, so if these have already been gone over, just slap me with a tuna :) I believe the reason flac is behind some of the closed source encoders is two fold: Blocking and arithmatic encoding. Blocking: If the data set is local (not streaming) and we have the opportunity to make a coupla passes on the data, its possible to determine non fixed block sizes that fit orders of prediction closely. I'm sure this is no surprise to all of you. Actually coming up with a algo to do this is not as easy as it sounds. However, a few more % can be squeezed this way jsut but fitting lp's...

Ive been fighting this for a coupla hours just scrounging around and fixing what I knew needed to be chown'd based upon errors in the logfiles etc... ;-> Phew!!! Thanks for pointers in advance - rh

I can think of a coupla ways to approach this and I'd like to hear about what he tried. A couple of % doesnt seem like much, but considering that flac is lossless, a couple of % here and there adds up to a big savings. > > you can get very close ot arithmetic coding with range coding, > which is much faste...

How to generate a random variate that is correlated with a given right-censored random variate?
Hi, I have a right-censored (positive) random variable (e.g. failure times subject to right censoring) that is observed for N subjects: Y_i, I = 1, 2, ..., N. Note that Y_i = min(T_i, C_i), where T_i is the true failure time and C_i is the censored time. Let us assume that C_i is independent of T_i. Now, I would like to generate another random variable U_i, I = 1, 2, ..., N, which is

ucs2 build of xapian?
Hi folks-- I'd really like to try out Xapian on my current server setup (Debian Sarge, Apache2, mod_python, django, postgresql, psycopg2). Problem is, my Python is compiled as ucs2, which is incompatible w/Xapian. I've tried recompiling Python w/ucs4, but it inevitably breaks psycopg2 (which I've blitzed & reinstalled on top of the new Python build, seems like dozens of times

Mdk 9.1, samba-LDAP 2.2.8a/3.0b3 (LDAP) can't print to z53
I've not been able to get Samba to print to a Lexmark Z53. If I call it a Z52, the driver uploads (to where, I have no idea so I can't check it) but I still can't get anything out of the printer.
