List of magic wins numbers
Hi,
I am looking for a list of theses special magic numbers that a samba
server (or a windows box) registers with at a wins server.
I already know of <00> as a ordinary name, <1b> as a domain. But what's
the rest? Is there a list anywhere? Perhaps somewhere in the docs? I
have searched them but haven't found anything yet.
Thanks,
Christopher

Resolving computername from ip
Hi,
Is there, on a intranet, any way to resolve the computername from its ip
? I have a setup where I know which users are on which ip, and I
wan't to notify some events to some users with a "smbclient -M". But
since I don't know the computername, I don't know any way to send the
popups...
thanks

ActiveComputerName vs ComputerName
Hi!
ComputerName and ActiveComputerName are values from registry (HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ComputerName\).
If I use `wine regedit` to set ActiveComputerName to any value after a short time it becomes equal to the value of ComputerName.
Can I set ActiveComputerName different than ComputerName?

How to use alias interface ?
...or Google could help me in any way.
My problem with the new server is that I need to configure (or better
restrict) my wine to use my alias-interface instead of the primary one.
I already found the following stuff in the configs:
[Network]
;; Use the DNS (Unix) host name always as NetBIOS "ComputerName"
(boolean, default "Y").
;; Set to N if you need a persistent NetBIOS ComputerName that possibly
differs
;; from the Unix host name. You'll need to set ComputerName in
;;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\ComputerName\ComputerName,
too.

login scripts --what to use
Hi,
We're setting up a PDC, and would like to have a login script to deliver
the mapped drives to users in particular groups, and connect to
printers. The printer drivers come from the [print$], share.
Does anyone have any good resources for this? What's the easiest and
simplest thing to get going --vbscript or batch files?
Thanks,

Override unjoined computername with SAMDOM to allow connection to share
...I have a Samba 4 domain (separate DC and file server), with a bunch of
Win/Mac/Lin domain joined machines, everything works on that side.
I have a machine with a read-only SOC which can't take a \ or @ in the
username, and in the samba file server logs, I see it is authenticating
with it's computername in place of the domain:

Permission denied on GPT.ini (Event ID 1058)
Ok, try this.
Gif the pc a uid and check again.
If it works then, its a share or security right.
Gpupdate /force works because at that point you "user"/user has a uid and gid.
The error occurs at start up because the COMPUTERNAME$ doent have access to that gpt.ini.
Resetting sysvol in that case doent help because the right on the gpt.ini is set by the group you assigned to the policy.
( so can be an inherrentance problem also )

DNS issue with clean install of samba 4.5.12-Debian

A minimal /etc/hosts only has :
127.0.0.1 localhost

And as extra with dhcp (optional)
127.0.1.1 hostname hostname.localdomain
Or
127.0.0.1 localhost hostname hostname.localdomain ( not recommended )
Or bit more.
192.168.0.1 computername.internal.domain.tld
1.2.3.4 computername.domain.tld
Basicly any FQDN must be resolvable where it is used.
Now a practical use, like a webserver.
Lets say you have this in /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost

limiting netlogon scripts to a subnet?-will this work?
Would this work? The problem is, I do not have
roaming profiles in use(As it is not practical for us,
as users tend to use the same computers). I want only
users with IP from 192.168.1.x to load the databases.
The loaddatabases.cmd file in question would contain

What user on what computer?
Hallo!
I found a quite usefull hint about email-notification using samba by simply writing a Mailslot-message-command into the users .forward-file.
That is quite nice, but there is a small problem: While the username is still the same, so does not the computername.
People can log on every computer in a network, so the computername varies.
I am looking for a method to run a script - on the server side (!!) at each logon and logoff of an user, so a user-database can be maintained.
I could write a script getting the computer a user logged in out of that databa...

IP to NetBIOS resolution
Hello,
Is there *any* way to reliablily determine the NetBIOS name of a computer
when you only know their IP address? I know it is very easy to find the IP
address from the NetBIOS name, but I can't seem to find any way of getting a
NetBIOS name from an IP..

I am running a run.bat file with the command wine cmd /c run.bat.

When running wine cmd /c run.bat I get the following error message,
