What happened to Ross Ihaka's proposal for a Common Lisp based R successor?
I read this paper
<https://www.stat.auckland.ac.nz/~ihaka/downloads/Compstat-2008.pdf> and
haven't been able to find out what happened - I have seen some sporadic
mention in message groups but nothing definitive. Does anyone know?

Re: [R] R on gentoo amd64 (gcc 3.3.3) is unstable --- no!
My appologies, this estimation is about right,
I spent last week at COMPSTAT in prague and didn't follow the list
closely.
Inspite of this fact I believe my posting is not entirely out of date.

Forthcoming R Conferences
...why 2009 is again in Europe. The main
reasons were:
a) we had a very good offer from Rennes, and (and at least almost one
year ago, when planning started) none from outside Europe
b) Having European useR!s in odd years will make it easier to set a
date: in even years there are the biannual Compstat conferences,
which together with all their satellite meetings block mid-August
to the beginning of September. In odd years on the other hand,
there is no regular big conference on computational statistics in
Europe.
So the basic plan is to be in Europe in odd years, and North America

Is there a project to compile R scripts into stand-alone executable file?
I know Matlab's M file can be converted to a stand-alone executable file. I
wonder if there is a project aimed at compiling R scripts into stand-alone
executable file. I think it will be very promising for R to be more widely
used in different fields.

subscripting in list() (PR#187)
Sorry My previous report is not detailed.
In R, you will get this:
> mylist <- list()
> mylist[[1]]
Error in mylist[[1]] : subscript out of bounds
> mylist[[1]] <- c(1)
Error: (list) object cannot be coerced to vector type 14
> mylist[[1]] <- c(1,2)
> mylist[[1]] <- c(1)
> mylist
[[1]]
[1] 1
I was trying to assigning c(1) to (mylist[[1]] <- c(1)) -- it seems
