Hello,
seems like the new default ext2/ext3 256 bytes inode size problem
applies to extlinux.
HPA, could you confirm it?

xulrunner 1.9.2.26 available in repackaged form for use with legacy programs
I have re-packaged xulrunner 1.9.2.26 for CentOS 5 for use with older
applications which can't be run with xulrunner 10.0.4. I created
'compatibity' RPMs that can be safely installed alongside xulrunner
10.0.4. I needed it to run the Evergreen 2.1 and 2.2 Staff Clients at
our local library. The RPMs are available in the Deepwoods Software
repo at the URL:

Ctrl-Alt-F? bindings broken under xen 3.0.3-142.el5_9.1 / 2.6.18-348.1.1.el5xen?
I am not sure what I did, but for some reason Ctrl-Alt-F? bindings are
broken on 64-bit xen desktop machine (but not on my laptop (32-bit, no
xen)). Both machines are (mostly) up-to-date and running CentOS 5.9.
I rarely hop to different Virtual Consoles (eg Ctrl-Alt-F1 ...
Ctrl-Alt-F7), but today I wanted to go to the main console to watch
some kernel verbage (I was checking something with

TRIPPLITE OMNIVSINT80 Compatibility
Using this UPS in the UK on 240V mains.
Connected via USB:
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 09ae:0001 Tripp Lite
Requires tripplite_usb driver as it is (Product ID: 0001). There is an
entry in the compatibity list for OMNIVS800 USB (protocol 2012) using
usbhid-ups which is little misleading (although I guess maybe correct
for some instances of the UPS).
OMNIVS1000 USB (older; product ID: 0001) is

Power Over Ethernet for *any* ethernet switch(or hub); product idea
PoE, or 802.3af, uses a device detection routine to determine if the
connected device needs power.
The process, in greatly simplified terms, is as follows:
1. Detect link state
2. Send a pulse of a known frequency and intensity over the
TX/RX pairs
3. Listen for reflection.
3a. No reflection- provide power
3b. Reflection- no power
Devices that comply with 802.3af have filters designed

aic() component in GLM-family objects
Is it generally known/has it been previously discussed here that the
$aic() component in GLM-family objects (e.g. results of binomial(),
poisson(), etc.) does not as implemented actually return the AIC, but
rather -2*log-likelihood + 2*(model_has_scale_parameter) ? Can anyone
in this forum gauge how a documentation patch would be received?
This behaviour does not seem to be documented in ?family

libao and recent ALSA builds
I had a go at building libao-0.6.0 and it barfed on the alsa output part,
complaining that snd_pcm_channel_status_t is undeclared - probably due to me
running alsa 0.9.0 beta4. So the question is, should I try and beat the
configure stuff into letting me disable alsa support and just use OSS, or
would I be better off trying my luck with the nightly builds?
And if so, can I get away with just

aic() component in GLM-family objects
FWIW p. 206 of the White Book gives the following for
names(binomial()): family, names, link, inverse, deriv, initialize,
variance, deviance, weight.
So $aic wasn't there In The Beginning. I haven't done any more
archaeology to try to figure out when/by whom it was first introduced

Section 6.3.3, on extending families, doesn't give any other relevant info.

Samba4 + Winbind + PAM Installation/Configuration
Hello,
Now that I have my Samba4 DC running great on CentOS6.4 I was wondering if somebody could help understand better how to install and configure Samba4 with winbind and PAM.
I used the tutorial here:
This got me through to the point where "Using pam_winbind" starts.

Vorbis newbie questions
Greetings:
I'm writing an article for the O'Reilly Network, and the focus is on
streaming audio with Linux. I would like to include material concerning
Vorbis, but I need some information:
1) What's up with www.vorbis.com and www.icecast.org ? Can anyone
say when they'll be back on-line ?
2) Where should I go to get the latest Vorbis sources ?

Power Over Ethernet for *any* ethernet switch (or hub); product idea
Based on several threads I've read on this list, I assume that it would be
handy to supply POE (power over ethernet) in an environment without having
to purchase POE switches (assumed expensive) and abandon one's existing
(familiar/custom/not-yet-expensed/etc.) switches/hubs.
Assume I have a non-POE switch with 24 RJ-45 (ethernet) ports. I design a
1U box that can be mounted just

Troubles for an non-IT beginner

I am absolutely new, means from non-IT sector but have attraction (developed
recently) towards linux and have chosen the centos distro for the
installation as an OS in my home PC for personal use. I went to the page:

But don't understand amongst the variety of options there. I also don't know

ntpd under Xen Dom0 exhibits extremely high jitter/noise? runs stable/quiet under non-xen kernel.
On a selection of boxes, ntpd running in Xen Dom0 reproducibly
exhibits extermely high noise/jitter.
Switching back to -default, non-xen kernel ntpd runs with very low jitter/noise.
Question -- how can I ''tame'' ntpd noise & jitter when running in Dom0?
Is the problem a config issue, or a bug?
Already reported this downstream; everybody''s "stumped".
