How can I import user-defined missings from Spss?
...---------------------------------------------------------------.
Have a look at the two variables age and sport. In spss the values (-99) in age is a missing, as well as the value (9) in sports.
As you can see - the information about the missings in R is lost. What can I do?
Many Thanks Christine Christmann

Depends. Perhaps it is best to check it out for the software packages
and the versions of the software packages you are using.

Ordinal data - Regression Trees & Proportional Odds
I have a data set w/ an ordinal response taking on one of 10 categories.
I am considering using polr to fit a cumulative logits model. I
previously fit the model in SAS (using proc logistic) which provides a
test for the proportional odds assumption (p < 0.001 for the test). Are
there simple diagnostic plots that can be used to look at the validity
of this assumption and possibly help w/

...character like "miss" would be even better.
To transform them into "NA" as the sysmis data from Spss is transformed automatically, would be an other alternative.
Unfortunately I don't know if any of these options are possible. Could you help me out?
Many thanks.

Regression trees with an ordinal response variable
...response by Pfr. Ripley to a
inquiry regarding the ability of rpart to handle ordinal responses in
2003. At that time rpart was unable to implement an algorithm to handle
ordinal responses. Has there been any effort to rectify this in recent
years?
Thanks!

binomial glm warnings revisited
Dear all,
Last autumn there was some discussion on the list of the warning

logistic regression for a data set with perfect separation
Dear R experts
I have the follwoing data
V1 V2

2 -4.8000000 0
3 -2.8666667 0
4 -0.8666667 0

6 -1.6666667 0
7 -0.1333333 1
8 1.2000000 1
9 1.3333333 1
and I want to know, whether V1 can predict V2: of course it can, since
there is a perfect separation between cases 1..6 and 7..9
How can I test, whether this conclusion (being able to assign an

Win 9x and WinNT Clients connecting to Samba-Server
Hello,
I know I should get rid of the problem by my own, but unfortunally I failed.
So I ask:
I`ve a subnet of win9x and WinNT clients connecting to our Linux file
server (no more servers in this subnet)
via samba 2.02. All win95 can see and mount services of the Samba server.
But win98 and WinNT can only see the server but can not connect to a service.
I`ve no encryption and security= user in

german umlaute win95 client vs. Linux-Samba file server
Hello,
I've a problem known especially to german speaking users (and other
nationalities using special characters).
I'm using Samba 1.9.18 and a linux 2.0.35 kernel
I want to create a directory or file with a name containing german umlaute
from the win95 client
so that I can see it on the linux machine with the equal characters I've
used under win95.
On the win95 machine the new

Logon.bat with samba
Hello,
I've tried to make out of my samba 2.0.3 server a logon server.
I' ve set
domain logons = Yes
domain master = No
local master =Yes
os level = 65
preferred master =Yes
but:
wins support = No
I made a share as recommended [netlogon] and place there a logon.bat.
The logon.bat contains
net use z: \\servername\public
for testing if the logon.bat is excecuted by login to the server.

encrypted passwords and netatalk
Hello,
yesterday I've changed my password system to encrypted password because
somebody wanted to log in with win98 notebook. And I wanted not to
make the change in registry of the notebook. Therefore I set encrypted
password = Yes,
added and enabled the user with smbpasswd -a -e <account>.
After this change he can log in via dhcp in our network.
But in the next morning I've

2nd try: sync of passwd and smbpasswd
Hello,
I'm using samba2.02 and shadowed passwords.
I' m on the way to migrate from plaintext to encrypted passwords.
Therefore I've set the parameter update encrypted to "Yes".
After everyone has logged in I will set this parameter to "No" again and
set encrypted passwd = Yes.
So far, so good. But three questions are remaining for me:
a) what to do with those who
