Using large-scale repetition in audio compression
...discarded, since AFAIK it's not used anywhere. I did a
quick web search but that didn't turn up much, so I figured I'd put
it up for discussion here anyway.
How about using large-scale repetition in audio compression? I'm
thinking of redundancy in repeated pieces of a song, ie a chorus.
Ofcourse, the different choruses aren't exactly the same (unless it
was mixed digitally and they cheated :-)), but wouldn't there be at
least some redundancy in the frequency domain? And could that be
used to lower the required bitrate for repeated parts of a song?
Ofcourse this is ha...

xml output from * ?
Hi Yawl,
I took delivery this morning of a used BetaBrite LED
display sign which I promptly set about playing with.
Having found a windows app that grabs XML headline
files from places like Slashdot and CNN as well as
stocks etc I had an idea.
What if I could get it to display stats from *? Things
like call volume, queue stats, message waiting info.
Now I'd be looking for someone to write

xml transcript stream proposal
.... An
ogg packet boundary will probably occur here, defining the tree depth for
any further splits.
The coarse structure of the transcript is given by a nestable <section>
element. We use the general 'class' attribute to distinguish the various
levels and types of grouping: verse from chorus, scene from act.
Typically, class is used only as a formatting hook for stylesheets, but
this is imposing some semantic content to the value. A more traditional
SGML approach would be to have different elements for each level of
grouping: <act><scene>...</scene>...</act>, &l...

Mathlib
First of all I would like to join the chorus of approval over the release
of R 1.0.0. It really is an excellent piece of software. I'm sure you
will astonish us again with Omega.
I have a query about Mathlib. It is such a nice collection of functions
that it would be nice to use it in other software, not necessarily related
to R. Is i...

As I still believe AAC is a really good one, maybe somebody can tell a

tiny bug in R installation (redhat)
First, let me join the chorus of praise for R. (Hey, isn't somebody going
to analyse all these praise emails in some statistical way?)
I'm writing to point out an error in the file permissions in the

trying to get better ogg quality for this clip
...mp3pro samples at 64k? it's the "gravel effect" that is troublesome.
the part in question is the first 15 seconds of this wave file:
http://qa01.live365.com/jlg/VH_simple.wav
this piece starts with a stereo guitar that is rich in harmonic content
(like chimes) with some flanging/chorus/delay type effects. way in the
background, there is some high frequency delay/reverb that goes easily
unnoticed unless using head phones. it sounds like the guitar pick
scratching against the strings.

How to log a Sieve match in Dovecot debug_log
Sorry @lbutlr, this is a very silly answer to my question...!
My script is not the definite spam solution on my mail server, obviously.
In addition to Spamassassin, blacklist implementation, SPF, DKIM and more, I need to filter some specific messages with particular words and log the script action. In my first mail I made an example with three really obvious words but my need is not about sex or

trouble installing icecast
Hello -
I'm not a Unix guru, but I can get around okay. I'm trying to build icecast
on my system, but when I run the configure program, it ends with the
following error:
"XSLT configuration could not be found"
I could send you the config.log, if that helps. I'm not sure how to solve
this error -- can you provide any pointers? I do have libxslt.so on my
system.

Ogg Vorbis is the format we recommend for both high quality or low
bitrate. The downside of it is worse compatibility than mp3 - not
everyone has a vorbis player, yet. AAC has compatibility problems too,
and generally doesn't exceed vorbis in quality, so you're on...

...Fates" off of the Star Wars I
soundtrack. Vorbis beta 4 at 128 produces artifacts that sound like some
tones are beating with others. I identified the Vorbis encode 16 of 16
times in an ABX test. I don't think it has anything to do with pre-echo:
it's just a mass of people in a chorus. Fraunhofer's FastEnc at 128 does
sound worse to me, if that's any consolation.

Guitar Pro in Wine?
My uncle recently bought a new computer and he wants me to help him install Guitar Pro.
The thing is, he doesn't have Windows, and I'm thinking of installing Ubuntu with wine on the comp.
Quiz time!
Can you use wine, with GP, and if you can, deos it perform poorly in any ways?

Just want to join the chorus of thank you. This is perfect. I found a
blog entry (http://asplake.blogspot.com/2006/01/revert-that-rakefile.html)
and worked it over a little into the file below which I put in
lib/tasks/rcov.rake in a rails project. It works great.

I WANT to be a wine user.
Hello,
I spent time this weekend trying to compile wine on my home computer. The machine is a Sun Microsystems X86 box running Solaris 10 operating system. I have the freeware including gmake and gcc installed and in the path.
I managed to get ./configure to run, but had to use --exclude-network-build and --exclude-pp-build or something like that to make it work.
