Monitoring slaves via dummy-ups
Hello, I wondered how folks monitored slaves. In my case, I am using Nagios and the check_ups plugin. It seems to work fine but being new to nut, I'm seeking confirmation that this is a sane approach. The goal: confirm the slaves have contact with the master. The environment: * FreeBSD 12.1 * nut-2.7.4 installed from package Background: I am replacing an APC 2200 UPS (still in use)...

Do you want to use NUT to manage system shutdowns on power failure?, or is Nagios sufficient for you?...

[nut-commits] svn commit r1156 - in trunk: . drivers
.... Flush input- and output buffers before sending any command. Can you explain the reasoning behind these changes please? The detection phase didn't stop after the minimum number of required replies to check for models that reply twice in a row and then proceed to returning garbage. Also, the check_ups function was there because the running a query isn't exactly the same as verifying the communications. It is mostly the same now, but keeping the two things separated is better. -- Carlos Rodrigues

Best practice to shutdown hosts which has not NUT via upssched

By "has not NUT", you might mean not running upsd. The best practice is to run upsmon on the other hosts. This does not require running NUT proper (server). Is there some reason why you can't

If you truly can't run upsmon, then you can speak the upsd protocol directly over tcp. For an example non-nut implementation, look at the "check_ups" plugin for nagios. It queries a NUT server for basic information, including whether it is on battery.

Maybe NUT should only claim that a UPS is ONLINE if ONLINE is the only thing it is?...

...a way to do that in Linux. You can [hardly any more] find some USB hubs, which allow ports to be powered on & off via software control. I'm using an older Linksys hub (http://a.co/gPhfi45) and the following little loop to reset the USB when there is a problem: root at odroid:~/bin# cat check_ups.sh #!/bin/bash while true do x=$(curl -s -o - 'http://192.168.1.5:85/cgi-bin/nut/upsstats.cgi?host=tripplite at 127.0.0.1:3493' | sed 's:<[^>]*>::g' | awk 'BEGIN {s = 0; } $1 == "Status:" { s = 1; next; } s == 1 { print $0; s = 0; }') if [ &...

I haven't tried it on RaspberryPi, but if there's some specific Tripp Lite information I can help with, let me know.
