Permission denied error while connecting to EMC Celerra 7 server
Hi, I'm getting "Permission denied" error while connecting to a EMC Celerra (version 7) server from samba client on unix machine. Looking at the packet capture it is observed that samba client is authenticating with "anonymous" instead of the user name that has been provided. Here are flags received from EMC Celerra 7 server as part of "Session Setup AndX...

Q: how to collect user/group-names
Hi Sorry if it's not 100% appropriate for this list, cannot think of better place to find people with lots of know-how from Unix and Windows. I'm currently working on replacing EMC's Celerra file servers by Linux/Samba. The SID to UID/GID mapping table on Celerra is very large, ~50'000 entries and I don't want to pollute my LDAP server with all this (using winbind with LDAP back-end). Most of those entries are there for historical reasons and are just useless. Now my question...

Question: backslash in file name
...DB) which writes files with a backslash in names, i.e: Log\GEN_INPUT_BASED_2899.csv not a problem for Unix but Samba present it to Windows users as: L2CYOP~L.CSV Is there any way _in Samba_ to strip this 'Log\' and give back to user the GEN_INPUT_BASED_2899.csv part. Tha appliance (EMC Celerra) I've just migrated data from, was magicaly doing this. Thanks for your time and any hint. Regards, Chris

High Availability strategies
Hi, we have a medium setup (8000 pop and imap users using almost every available client, 800GB of stored mails using maildir on a Celerra NFS server, with index files on local disks, and procmail for local delivery), being served by a Dell PowerEdge 2850 (2GB RAM and dual P4 Xeon 3,2GHz). Our current not-so-high availability setup is based on a similar server with the same setup and a easy but manual process to switch from one...

dotlock O_EXCL query
Hi there, I was wondering if someone can assist with clarifying why O_EXCL does not always work with NFS. Is it related to NFS protocol version support or export permissions mode out of the Celerra/Netapp ( e.g: mixed mode, unix file permissions ? ) Please advise. Thanks. Regards, new dovecot user.

Does EMC use Samba for CIFS?
I have heard that EMC might be using a port of Samba for their CIFS protocol. Can anybody support or refute this? Are there any commands that can be issued or any operations that can be performed and sniffed to verify this one way or the other? Thanks, Paul

unicode conversion
Hi, We have windows XP and NT workstations. They are configured to support french language. Also we export samba 2.2.8 shares through a solaris 8 machine. But these samba shares are NFS mounted file systems that come from a NAS (Celerra's EMC) In smb.conf: - Character set parameter is not set. - Codepage is 850 In the NAS file server the parameter is set to unicode. In windows machines filenames look good. In Solaris for example eacute are replaced with something like \202 or spaces are replaced with \200. In NAS, is wors...

Creating a machine account manually (EMC, Samba PDC)
Greetings, I am trying to join a EMC Celerra NS502 CIFS server to our Samba 3.0.21a domain controller. According to EMC, I was told that we need to manually create the machine account first. How is the best way to do this? We are using an openLDAP backend, using the idealx scripts. Joining a windows machine from the computer properties dia...

NFS and Filesystem quota
Hi, I've recently moved my mailboxes to a NFS share (on an emc Celerra), and, as expected, the quota extensions no longer works. However, I've read that adding http://dovecot.org/patches/quota-rquotad.c to $DOVECOT/src/plugins/quota, adding a line to $DOVECOT/src/plugins/quota/Makefile.am and rebuilding, it should work again. Unfortunately, it doesn't com...

Samba and NFS quota problem

Joining EMC NAS to Samba 3 Domain?
I see list discussions on this subject from a few years back but they were very brief and, it seems, inconclusive. I would be interested in hearing from anybody who has discovered the "trick" to getting an EMC Celerra to join their Samba 3.x domain. I have an old NetApp Filer happily joined. I simply created an account with "smbldap-useradd -w filername" and when I then configured the Filer for CIFS it was immediately accessible and I could see "SambaNTPassword" and related bits in its r...

ACLs set in Windows not honored
Hi All, I am in the process of trying to build a Samba server to replace our aging EMC Celerra file server appliance.? The goal, ultimately, is to build a file server on which we can migrate a file share from the Celerra (ACL permissions and all) over to Samba, where the file share can be exported via NFS as well as Samba, AND the permissions we see in Linux are what we see in Windows (as we...

dovecot 2.1.5 performance
...an running in vmware. I have about 70000 user accounts, most of them without real activity (they are students who doesn't read his email or have its account redirected to other provider). I have about 700-1000 concurrent imap connections. I have storage in nfs (nfsv3, the nfs server is a celerra), but indexes are in local filesystems (each server has its own index fs). Mailboxes are in maildir format. Old servers and actual director servers are load balanced with an radware appdirector load balancer (the new backend servers don't need to be balanced because I'm using a direct...

Pre-populating winbind idmap doesn't work.
Greetings, (re-phrased posting) In order to get CIFS and NFS interoperability in an EMC Celerra environment I'm trying to pre-populate a Samba winbindd idmap database (/var/lib/samba/winbindd_idmap.tdb) with some fixed entries. My thought was that a "net idmap restore" from a manually generated file should match the output from a subsequent "net idmap dump". But it do...

smbclient, kerberos, and EMC
Hi Everyone, I'm trying to get smbclient to cooperate with my new EMC Celerra (just got it a little while ago) using kerberos. My windows domain environment is win2000 + sp4, the EMC is "joined" to the domain. I am using samba 3.0, fresh sources, and MIT KRB5 1.3.4, all freshly built. I join the domain, etc. everything is happy. I use kinit user@REALM to get m...

Setting up Linux File Servers in a University Environment
Hello Everyone I work for a University Department that has a high number of Linux Desktop Users. Currently we provide a users home directory via NFS from a file server. Generally it works well for us, but I have been asked to look at our options for expanding the storage we have available. So I thought one of the first things I had better do is consider are there alternatives to the way we

Dovecot in-house benchmarking
Hi, Before some major changes in our infrastructure, I was interested in the performance impact of moving indexes to our NAS (Emc Celerra v5.5). So I downloaded both dovecot-1.1.19 and dovecot-1.2.6, compiled them and wrote 2 confs for each of them, one with local indexes and another with indexes in the NAS. Then I created 19 pam users, and tested system performance this way: - uninstall current installed version - install a new...

batch convert mbox to maildir
Hello, I have used mb2md for an individual user like this: su ~username cd ~ ./mb2md -m This converted /var/spool/mail/username mbox to /home/users/username/Maildir just as I expected. To convert 100s of users the same way would be a chore (su as each user for permissions, etc.). Is there a way to batch process all /var/spool/mail/$USER to /home/users/$USER/Maildir with the correct
