About Shorewall 1.3.14
It is my plan that the upcoming release of Shorewall (1.3.14) will
definitely be the last of the 1.3.x releases and will very probably be the
last release of Shorewall 1.x.x.
I will continue to support Shorewall 1.3 but will be making no more
enhancements to it. I will be devoting my time to Shorewall 2.
If anyone is interested in taking over the development of Shorewall 1,
please let me

Samba share question
I have the following Samba share:
[Programs]
writable = yes
path = /home/wes/Download
I want myself to have write access, and everyone else to have read-only
access. The write access works fine when I authenticate, but anyone that
does not authenticate gets the you do not have permission error. The
/home/wes/Download folder ACL has read access to group and others. What do
I need to do to

I can't find the library libpopt.so.0 anywhere on the system.
Apparently , I forgot to load something.

Hi all,
Is there a command that emulates net view? I want to dump a list of all NetBIOS hosts actively on the LAN.
Thanks,

File versioning with Samba (on a Linux filesystem)?
Apologies if this question is answered somewhere obvious. I just spent a
couple of hours surfing around trying to find an answer.
I'd like to provide windows clients with access to files via samba and have
samba (or other) do file versioning. In the case that a user happens to
delete a file or we want to return to an earlier version, that should be
possible.
Is there a standard solution for

Samba 4 Clustering
Hi List,
From what I've read in many mailing lists, Samba 3 is not truly
clusterable.
From what I understand, people have been able to cluster Samba with
varying levels of success. Transparent failover and active-active file
serving ( 2 or more smbs serving the same files (through a cluster
filesystem like GFS) from multiple cluster nodes simultaneously ) are
two things that are not

Client login delays - especially after reboot
I have just migrated to a new server and have Samba ver 3.0.12-5-SuSe
running on a small network ( 7 win 98pcs)
Logins are possible from all clients but morning logins (after client
reboot) are delayed. It can take 2 or 3 attempts to successfully login. At
each failed attempt the hour glass sits there for 30 seconds or so. logins
usually succeed on the second or third attempt.

Thanks for help with hosts file
All (Tom especially),
Thanks for correcting my hosts file faux pas. I think I now (kinda) know how this file is used. Can I use this to control what subnets can get NAT''ed out and back through the net zone? For instance, with nothing in it every network inside can get out without a problem. If I do specify networks in it, is it true that only those specified can get out and back?

syslog question
Hi everyone. I''m trying to get syslog to stop sending logging info to
the all of the ttys, as it makes doing anything on the box near
impossible with the firewall running.
I did a man syslog.conf, and then looked in the /etc/syslog.conf. I
commented out the xconsole stuff, and uncommented the part where he
(joey) says he likes to output to /dev/tty8 (which is what I want to do
as well).

Special config needed to add other internal private class C nets?
Hi everyone,
I have shorewall up and running fine, and have for well over a year now. Internally, we have a LAB and they need multiple separate private class C networks to do testing, etc. I built a router, so all of the private LANs can communicate - This seems to work fine. I''m confused about what do I need to modify on my FW to get everyone to communicate out, masq''ed to the

winbind talking to backup ADS server
Hi-
I've set up samba 3.02a and have it successfully authenticating against a
Windows 2000 ADS Server. Everything is working great, except that samba
(winbind?) won't talk to the backup ADS server when the primary ADS server
goes down. I'm shutting off the primary ADS server to test this, and when I
do I get the following:
[root@iceberg /etc]# /usr/local/samba/bin/wbinfo -u

What's the best method - probably simple
Hi all,
I'm testing out a pdf printer script I'm writing on a live samba system. I modify the script, but my changes do not seem to show up when I print. It seems like samba is caching the script. I do not want to restart samba (I'm guessing that will disconnect people), but I want to force samba to re-read the new script. I'm guessing I can HUP whatever smb process is open for

no mapping between account names and security ids was done
I use a openLDAP database for authentication on my Redhat 7.2 server. The
domain is "HOME". I have had no problem adding trust accounts and
authenticating against it.
Today I had to change the name of my Win2K workstation from poseiden to
poseiden1 for compatibility with a package I am testing. Once I changed it
and put in a new trust account, I could not rejoin the domain.
I gave up and

security = domain and NetBIOS aliases
Hi everyone,
I rely on about 8 NetBIOS aliases on my samba filer. I have been using security = server, but I have been running to some strange issues where if a user just logs off and then back on, they are denied access to shares. If they reboot, they can then get back in ok. I've set debugging up, and it appears that samba does not recognize the user after a logoff/logon, and uses nobody as

Hi there,
I have installed samba-2.2.2 on Redhat linux 7.0 . I have setup the whole
