ZFS on Caviar Blue (Hard Drive Recommendations)
Hi list, I googled around but couldn''t find anything on whether someone has good or bad experiences with the Caviar *Blue* drives? I saw in the archives Caviar Blacks are *not* recommended for ZFS arrays (excluding apparently RE3 and RE4?). Specifically I''m looking to buy Western Digital Caviar Blue WD10EALS 1TB drives [1]. Does anyone have any experience with these drives? If this is the wrong way to...

Conditional Autoregressive Value at Risk (CAViaR)
Hi, I am trying to replicate Engle and Manganelli's paper Conditional Autoregressive Value at Risk (CAViaR) by Regression Quantiles. I have the Matlab code which I cannot get to work as I have never used Matlab before, does anyone know if there is the same code available to estimate the CAViaR models in R? Thanks, Shane -- View this message in context: http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/Conditional-Autoreg...

quantile regression - estimation of CAViaR
How is it possible to estimate the conditional autoregressive Value-at-Risk model qantile_t(tau)=a0+a1*qantile_(t-1)(tau)+a2*abs(r_(t-1)) see http://www.faculty.ucr.edu/~taelee/paper/BLSpaper1.pdf (page 10)) of Engle & Manganelli in R? The qantile_(t-1)(tau)-term causes headache. Kind regards, Jaci -- "Ein Herz f?r Kinder" - Ihre Spende hilft! Aktion: www.deutschlandsegelt.de

One disk speed problem [SOLVED], and a question on hdparm
...hich took under two hours, while the same regular one rand nearly six. I'd been googling on and off for weeks, and this morning, ran across something: partition alignment. A thread where someone who'd done some tests and found that was his problem. So, here's the answer: we have these Caviar Green 2tb drives (the thread I found had either a 1tb, or 1.5tb), (and no, we are *NOT* going to buy Caviar Green for servers ever again). The big thing is that they use 4k sectors, *not* 512 bytes. Following directions, I pulled it into fdisk, and then used a command I've not needed before: u....

WD caviar/mpt issues
I know that this has been well-discussed already, but it''s been a few months - WD caviars with mpt/mpt_sas generating lots of retryable read errors, spitting out lots of beloved " Log info 31080000 received for target" messages, and just generally not working right. (SM 836EL1 and 836TQ chassis - though I have several variations on theme depending on date of purchase: 836EL...

Software RAID1 with CentOS-6.2
Hello, Having a problem with software RAID that is driving me crazy. Here's the details: 1. CentOS 6.2 x86_64 install from the minimal iso (via pxeboot). 2. Reasonably good PC hardware (i.e. not budget, but not server grade either) with a pair of 1TB Western Digital SATA3 Drives. 3. Drives are plugged into the SATA3 ports on the mainboard (both drives and cables say they can do 6Gb/s). 4.

Race condition with mdadm at boot [still mystifying]
...e last devices probed by the driver for a particular controller. It would appear that the drivers are bailing out before managing to enumerate all of the partitions on the last drive in a group, and missing partitions occur quite randomly. So it may or may not be a timing issue between the WD Caviar Black drives and both the LSI and Marvell SAS/SATA controller chips. So, I replaced the two drives (SATA-300) with two faster drives (SATA-600) on the off chance they might respond fast enough before the drivers move on to other duties. That didn't help either. Each group of arrays uses c...

Still more questions WRT selecting a mobo for small ZFS RAID
Like many others, I am looking to put together a SOHO NAS based on ZFS/CIFS. The plan is 6 x 1TB drives in RAIDZ2 configuration, driven via mobo with 6 SATA ports. I''ve read most, if not all, of the threads here, as well as sbredon''s excellent article on building a home NAS, yet I still have a number of unanswered questions. I was leaning heavily towards the M2N-E for a while,

4kB sector size HDDs
Hello again. Do any of you have one of the 'new' HDDs with 4kB Sectors currently in use? I would upgrade to the 4kB disks but I don't know if this might be problematic as I intend to use ZFS w/ RAIDz or at least a classic RAID6. How might this affect performance under 5.5 and how do I go about setting up the alignment of the partitions I use? Kind regards Dawid Horace

sata_nv, CentOS 4 update 2 and hang during post-install
Good day. Thanks in advance for any help. I have a Tyan S2895 (Thunder K8WE) with 2 275 Opterons and the latest (1.02) bios. It appears to have an nVidia nForce SATA chipset which connects to a 250gb WD Caviar SATA drive. Using the CentOS 4 update 2 x86_64 DVD, the install is peachy until half-way through the "performing post install configuration" bit. Then it hangs forever. I have tried: disabling RAID in the bios mem=256M on the command line a text install -- the hang was at the 50% mar...

Odd issue with 7.7.1908 updated with qemu-kvm-ev
So, I have a client that has an internal use application that needs an ancient version of libc5.? That's not a typo; libc5.? Before the server that ran it died about a year and a half ago (said server was an AMD K6-2/450 with a 6GB Western Digital Caviar drive that had been spinning nearly continuously for almost 20 years!) it was running on Red Hat Linux 5.2.? The last version of CentOS that shipped with a libc5 was 2.1.? So I set them up a KVM guest running CentOS 2.1, mainly because Red Hat 5.2 wouldn't recognize the network at all, usin...

Hard disk recomendation for a software raid 5 array. Does Linux Software Raid support/interacts well with TLER enabled disks.
...kup server using a software raid 5 array of 4 500GB disks. What I have available on the market is: 1. HITACHI GST Deskstar T7K500 500GB 7200rpm 16MB cache Serial ATA II-300 2. SEAGATE Barracuda 7200.10 with NCQ 500GB 7200rpm 16MB cache Serial ATA II-300 3. Western Digital 500GB SATAII RAID EDITION Caviar SE16 7200rpm 8.9ms 16MB cache I am tempted to use the Western Digital Raid Edition as it has 5 years of warranty. However I found out that the "Raid Edition" means that the disk supports TLER - time limited error recovery: http://www.excelmeridiandata.com/products/wd_raid_edition_drive...

newer smartctl?
If y'all remember the problem I posted a while back, with a 3TB drive for userspace loosing it on a server, and spitting DRDY errors, but which work on everything else. Well, enough research, and conversation, and I may have found the problem: it's a Caviar Green, meant for a desktop, and the controller in the server has issues, because it uses TLER: http://hardforum.com/archive/index.php/t-1285254.html http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=14603.0 In short, if it hits an error, it can take, in extreme cases, up to two min to recover; meanwhile, a...

Race condition with mdadm at boot
...S silently checking RAM, with the side effect of giving the disks ample time to spin up. I have a total of 15 drives. Three of them are fast 2-1/2" drives used for the host OS filesystems, running on the ICH-10 SATA controller. No problem at all with those. The other 12 drives are 2TB WD Caviar Black series. 6 are connected to the on-board 8-port LSI 1068E chip, and 6 divided equally between 2 Tempo 'Sonnet' 4-port PCIe cards (Marvell chips). All drives have the same 8 partitions each. All drives have the same 8-partition configuration. The LSI controller supports 8 RAID-6...

Error with 1.9.0 - Invalid HOMEDRIVE
I installed R project 1.9.0 on Windows XP. The installation went well. Then, I rebooted. Next, I clicked the icon under Programs in the Start menu and received this error, "Fatal Error: Invalid HOMEDRIVE". I clicked OK to the error message. The program does not start. I went to a DOS prompt and did "echo %HOMEDRIVE%" and it returned "C:". This letter is a valid

5-STABLE softupdates issue?
...copied into the log, but they haven't. Is this a situation the current 5-STABLE softupdates code (on a UFS1 FS that I kept from FreeBSD 4) is allowed to cause? Is that a bug in the file system, say, write ordering goofed up? Or is that a bug in the firmware of my disk drive (Western Digital Caviar AC420400D, a rebranded IBM DJNA drive)? I gather that ATA drives are supposed to flush their caches on software (command) and hardware resets (reset line active). I did not power cycle. -- Matthias Andree _______________________________________________ freebsd-current@freebsd.org mailing list ht...
