should cAos block access to mirror.caosity.org?
Hey,
Greg suggested that I take a straw poll.
Should cAos take steps to prevent getting stuck with a
big ISP bill in the future?
For example, should cAos:
a) for new installs, have the yum.conf point to public
mirrors, rather than to mirror.caosity.org?
b) make sure that "yum update" does not substitute a
new yum.conf file that points only to
mirror.caosity.org?
c) allow public

Packages on demmand
Hi all,
I have four servers (one with redhat 7.3, two with
CentOS 3.4 and one with CentOS 4 for testing). I would
like to do a partial package mirror with os, updates,
contrib branches and so on. Anybody knows if exists
any tool for redhat based distros, like apt-proxy in
debian world ( that donwloads packages on demmand),
that supports this feature??
I see yam tool from dag repository, but it

centos-announce list?
Any chance we can set up a low-volume "centos-announce" list so that we
all don't have to read all of these non-Centos-specific E-mail threads
about people figuring out how to admin a Linux box when all we need to
know is when major releases/milestones/news items are available?

OT -- Inexpensive CentOS dedicated servers?
Hey all,
I am looking to get some input regarding inexpensive dedicated servers
-- preferably with a hosting company the offers CentOS as an OS
option. Does anybody have any input or recommendations? I'd really
like to support a company that uses CentOS. And there are _so many
options out there, is kind of overwhelming.
Thanks,
Ryan

mirror.caosity.org change...
sorry for the massive cross-post, but I wanted to make sure that I get everyone
that needs to know this.
Mirror.caosity.org is having problems keeping up with all of the mirrors.
Rsync is a memory hog when dealing with large repositories, and mirror just
can't handle it.
I am migrating mirror.caosity.org to a new host which should be able to handle
the load better. Also, I will be limiting

yum stalls <?>
I just installed a fresh 3.3 system (because those are the ISO's I had on
hand). Upon running yum update, it starts to download headers and then
stalls. I hit Ctl-C and it continues to download about 4-5 more headers and
stalls. I hit Ctl-C again and it pulls a few more headers. Anyone seen
this and/or know how to fix it?
TIA

I have ecommerce stores on my server who use the same instantssl certificate
without any problems. These particular certificates were migrated over from
one plesk system to my new server with centOS 3.4 and plesk 7.5.1 reloaded.

We got it working. It was a custom config problem for that one site.

bind and 3.4
Hello,
I encountered a problem when upgrading from 3.3 to 3.4 on i386.
The machine is a production name server running bind. Looks like the
new rpm moved my named.conf to .rpmsave and chkconfig'ed bind to off.
That's really bad. A more gentle behavior would have been to save the
new named.conf to .rpmnew and not mess with initscripts.
Anyone else notice that?

Release of centos-3.3 ISP bill
It turns out that the release of Centos-3.3 was so popular, that it threw us
way over the threshold of our ISP's, and now we are stuck with a _very_ large
bill (as in an estimated 6TB of transfers). While in one hand I am ecstatic
that we are so successful, but on the other hand, that is coming out of the
developers pockets. The developers should be the last ones footing these
bills (and this

Important Change to mirror.caosity.org, mirror.centos.org
mirror.caosity.org is going to become a cluster of 3 servers - using
round-robin dns.
all uploads need to be done in future to master.caosity.org which will be
the new mirror master - the others will sync off of that one.
Please make sure that all scripts etc that do uploading are changed to
upload to master.caosity.org
Once the rr dns records are in place you may find that you may not be

NNTP versus web forums
I see that a number of questions are being answered on the new web
forum that is now part of the centos site. And the mailing lists So
now there are two places to search, both the forum and the mailing list
archives.
This is just doubles the work required to follow along or find a
solution.
I know NNTP isn't sexy, it doesn't allow graphics in posts, it doesn't
have person

CentOS-4 RC1 (i386) Bugfixes
All,
There are 3 bugfix updates for CentOS-4 (RC1).
1. mod_perl needed to be recompiled after the RH errata for perl was
incorporated, but it was not flagged by the perl update.
( https://bugzilla.caosity.org/show_bug.cgi?id=803 ) (thanks Joshua
Hirsh)
2. httpd identified itself as Apache/2.0.52 (Red Hat) Server instead of
CentOS ( https://bugzilla.caosity.org/show_bug.cgi?id=806 ) (thanks

Bind Issues
I'm running bind in a chroot environment. It seems that since the Redhat
snafu which wrecked bind (yes, I had caching nameserver running as well
but not anymore) I have been having problem with my slave nameservers
retrieving updates from the master.
Looking at the zone records, some are owned by root, some are owned by
named. I'm now confused as to what the ownership should be and
