nmbd reacts to its own broadcasts?
...ll incoming trafic from my own ip address.
When I started SAMBA, I reveived hits on my new IP filter, the SAMBA log
messages stopped, and the delays between the registration packets for
each name became 2, 1, and 1 s. Problem solved!
But is this normal behavior? Should I be receiving my own UDP broacasts?
Is nmbd's reacting to them a bug? Is there a better way to avoid these
errors? Is this an artifact of my network (somewhat ancient: 350MHz
Pentium II server, one 10Mbps hub, but less than 10 m span)?
Sincerely,
Rick

Shares get disconnected and cannot reconnect over VPN
...ng PPTP (which puts me on the same subnet as the
server, not on a different one) and basically it seems I am getting the
same behaviour.
Obviosuly the same clients, when connected directly to the server's lan,
show no issues at all and work flawlessly.
I don't know if PPTP lets broacasts go through or not. OpenVPN does not,
since it's routed and not bridged. I assume that apart from speed (512K
on WAN connections) broadcasts are the only differences between LAN and
WAN set-ups.
Is there something I missed with broadcasts? I assume that since I use
WINS, I don...

Linux smb client on a Windows 2000 LAN network
...1. By default, does the LAN server on the Windows XP Professional machine
broadcast all of its "Shared Documents" folder(s) via an SMB-compliant
protocol? That's what appears to be happening.
2. How is the Linux machine made aware that SMB-based resources are being
broacast on its network if its SAMBA server is shut down. Does SAMBA,
or
some other software installed on it, permit it to act as an SMB client?
Thanx in advance for any and all help.

Practicality of fixing samba's case mangling problems?
...re compatible when it comes to looking for Domain (and _likely_,
machine names).
I've looked at the traffic in an attempted join of workstation 'Athenae'
into 'Bliss',
which has had it's case mangled by samba3.
Dialogue goes something like:
Workstation 'Athenae' broacasts: I want a login user="" to domain Bliss.
(a query for a login server, I would gather.
PDC 'Ishtar' (samba3 on *nix), responds this login request, "there is no
user "" here.
Athenae then responses with login request for Athenae to 'Bliss' with marked
as a...
