commit 8ced76ea128c8fb2792477e09b41fa989f2e572f
Author: Richard Boulton <richard at tartarus.org>
Date: Fri Sep 10 09:50:40 1999 +0000
Martins initial code, which didn't work for him but did for me.
Back then Richard, Martin and I all worked for BrightStation, and
Richard and I were working in a small office high above the foyer of St
John's Innovation Centre in Cambridge, UK - just behind the "/" strut
below the highest part of the roof about 1/4 in from the right of the

Relicensing Xapian
...ething we actually
chose for Xapian, but rather due to a historical accident - it's the
licence of the codebase that Xapian was originally based on.
To briefly summarise that early history, Xapian has evolved out of a
codebase known as "Open Muscat" which was released under GPLv2+ by
BrightStation PLC (most recent contribution 2001). We don't have
permission to relicense BrightStation's code. After BrightStation stopped
developing the code, there were some contributions copyrighted Ananova Ltd
(most recent 2002) and then a very small number from Orange PCS Ltd which
took over An...

this size. And of course you can search the index by yourself at

I need 2 x 100 million more documents into each index, and I hope it
will fit on one hard disk of 2TB, and I will soon beat single handedly
the largest Xapian BrightStation's Webtop search engine implementation
(archive.org snapshot), which offered a sub-second search over around
500 million web pages (around 1.5 terabytes of database files).

SVN migration
...t how best to use cvs2svn to convert the CVS
repo.
I'm wondering if we want to strip out some of the tags - in particular
the old snapshot_* tags. These mark points when the code was know to
bootstrap and pass "make distcheck" on x86 linux, but the newest is
2001/04/24 - back in the BrightStation days! In the unlikely event that
anyone really cares, they can use the old CVS tree. Or perhaps we
shouldn't keep serving that to avoid confusion.
I'm not totally decided myself. Converting both with and
without the snapshot tags gives repo sizes of 92508K and 90500K
so there probabl...

Licensing
...d GPL compatibility is
something they desire for precisely this reason), it did prompt me to
think about how we're tracking where we are on the license issue.
As per <http://trac.xapian.org/wiki/FAQ/CommercialLicence>, we have a
clear idea of who owns what (modulo some uncertainty around
Brightstation copyright ownership). Certainly for easily-contactable
entities, we know who contributed to which file, and indeed could
figure out ownership down to the change level.
It strikes me that, given many of the current contributors to Xapian
are agreed in principle in a bright and shiny future of LG...
