S4 classes and objects -- fixed structure? No...
...elp page.
Your new class is said to have a fixed structure: two slots, x, and y,
and that should apply to all objects you construct as members of that class.
> tr <- new( "track" )
Now do the following:
> tr[ "ping" ] <- "pong"
> tr$bingo <- "bongo"
> tr[[ "blaa" ]] <- c( 200, 300 )
Of course you can use the well known operators to access these "list entries
in a S4-class object":
> tr[ "blaa" ]
> etc.
You see what can happen if you decide to do a bit stress testing. The
question is not whe...

Audio Quality Feedback (probably a bug?)
...ssion Impossible" by Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton). It's pretty subtle, but it's audible.
I've ripped the wave from the original CD, and encoded it at average bitrate 350kbps. I've noticed that at the start of the song (about 10 seconds from the beginning), one of the Bongo hits sounds a bit strange, more spatial than it should be. It's like the original Bongo is in the center, and there are two "echoes" to the bongo in the left and the right channels. But it's not really echoes because they occur at the same time of the original voice, not after it....

Transcoding listening test
...n' (Sinead O'Connor)

ogg was 124kbps
The ogg sounded much flatter, especially in the voice of
the singer. It was not all that annoying, but it was obvious
that quality was harmed, even in these conditions.
Third sample, part of 'Bongo bong' (Manu Chao), BladeEnc
at 160kbps, voice with instruments in background, resulting
ogg was 118kbps
The sound was horrible. There were strong distortions
in the voice of the singer which were extremely annoying.
Given these results, I would conclude transcoding will
give very annoying art...

Missing .Net checkboxes
Hello,
I installed Wine and .Net 2.0 with winetricks. The applications that I am interested are working but not in 100%. All checkboxes are missing, also the arrows of comboboxes. Is there a way to fix this? Also the windows are not correctly resized but this is the smaller problem. Is there a solution to fix this?

puppet-0.23.1 rpm''s
Hi,
I''ve just built rpm''s for puppet-0.23.1 - since there were a few people
who had trouble with the update for 0.23.0 (the change in config files
requires a bit of rpm trickery), I decided to be a little more cautious
in how I push the new packages.
So far, new packages are (or, will be shortly) available in rawhide,
Fedora 7 updates-testing, and in my yum repos for

Dovecot under brute force attack - nice attacker
Hi List,
optimizing the configuration on one of our servers (which was
hit by a brute force attack on dovecot) showed an odd behavior.
The short story:
On one of our servers an attacker did a brute force
attack on dovecot (pop3).
Since the attacker closed and reopened the connection
after every user/password combination the logs showed
many lines like this:
dovecot: pop3-login: Aborted

Two questions
Greetings,
I have two questions that I could not answer from the
documentation.
A - ecdf and confidence intervals : Is there a (simple) way to generate
confidence intervals (95%) for a ecdf?
B - cross-validation of rpart trees : a colleague is using S to
generate decision tree and mentioned to me the use of cross-validation. Is
this function enabled in R ? if so, how should one proceed to

setting environment variables
Hi all,
I''m running Puppet on FreeBSD and recently I started building my own
packages. I would like to set the PKGROOT variable on all hosts so
that packages are fetched from my server instead of freebsd.org. Is
it possible to set this with puppet?
I''ve read the suggestion on Trac [1], and it solves the problem when
puppet is run with an rc script, but it won''t work

(Classical) Request for Standardization of expanded TAGS
A month or two ago I sent an email to this list proposing to expand
the list of "standard" tags for Ogg Vorbis. No tag would be required,
but if you wanted to encode certain types of information about a file,
you could use a standard tag.
I went through the whole discussion, and revised my proposal in light
of all the comments from everyone. Here is the updated proposal.

Puppet Best Practice
Hello everyone,
A long time ago, I posted the Stanford Best Practices and I''ve gone through
and updated it today. I''d like to have people go through it and see if we
can strip out some Stanford specific stuff and tag this as an official best
practice. I think an official best practice will be important as more and
more people consider making shareable modules, etc (mostly
