Efficiency
...at. Since switching to flac, I notice the (rather loud) system fan on the laptop running much less of the time during playback. I see on this page http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Lossless_comparison that a flac advantage is "Very fast decoding" while monkey's audio boasts "High efficiency", and I was hoping for something a little more concrete. -- Chris

Which is better for production: MySQL5 or PostGres8.1?
I''m coming from an Oracle and SQL Server background. I''d like to use OpenSource for my next RoR project. MySQL5.x and Postgres8.1 seem to be the most popular. I''d like some comments on which would be the better choice for a production environment and why. Here are my initial concerns in order of priority: 1. Works well with RoR. ( migrations, etc) 2. Stable enough

Asus L1N64 - a good candidate for a ZFS based home server?
This Asus board looks promising, assuming the parts (nForce 680a chipset) are Solaris friendly: http://www.asus.com.tw/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=136&l3=486&model=1530&modelmenu=2 The board boasts 12 (!) SATA2 ports. The FX-7x series CPUs appear to be a very cost effective ($799) 4 core solution. Ian

NT terminal server
I'm running a NT4.0 Terminal Server with 50+ peopleon it. All the users' home directories / data etc. is located on a samba server (2.2.1a) on a RedHat7.1 box. All the users on the server are shown in samba under the same connection as they're all on the same machine... this means samba only runs one copy of smb for all these users. Everything seems to be working / set up fine but

[PATCH v2 3/3] virtio_ring: Use const to annotate read-only pointer params
Add const to make the read-only pointer parameters clear, similar to many existing functions. Use `container_of_const` to implement `to_vvq`, which ensures the const-ness of read-only parameters and avoids accidental modification of their members. keep.source.pkgs()
Recently Brian Ripley had occasion to mock my inability to see a comment in the code for arima(), in the stats package. After considerable dredging around in the r-news archives I found reference to keep.source() and keep.source.pkgs(), which I conjectured just ***might*** possibly be the ``obvious'' resource to which Prof. Ripley thought I ought to have resorted. However, after

R-2.15.2 changes in computation speed. Numerical precision?
Speaking of optimization and speeding up R calculations... I mentioned last week I want to speed up calculation of generalized inverses. On Debian Wheezy with R-2.15.2, I see a huge speedup using a souped up generalized inverse algorithm published by V. N. Katsikis, D. Pappas, Fast computing of theMoore-Penrose inverse matrix, Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra, 17(2008), 637-650. I was so

Problems connecting source
I wouldn't be too quick to boast that nearly all of Peercast-network users utilize Oddcast... the last release of Peercast was about 6 months ago, and the software is still quite buggy & non-optimized. =P However, I do agree that Oddcast is a good, reliable stream source. >From: oddsock <oddsock@oddsock.org> >Reply-To: icecast@xiph.org >To: icecast@xiph.org >Subject:

NFSV4?
Hi Timo, I just read about NFSv4 now being included in SuSE and Redhat Enterprise versions, and although I don't use it myself, wondered how this will impact Dovecot for those using it? Will it make life easier? Or is it even supported currently? Just curious... thanks... -- Best regards, Charles

Is there a maximum limit for the domU memory ?
Hello everybody The current limit (we''re working with Xen 4.0.1 on a debian squeeze server) for the domU memory is 256 Gb Is it possible to do something to get domUs with more than that ? Do we have to upgrade Xen hypervisor for that purpose or is a kernel recompilation sufficient ? We would like to have a vm with 768 Gb memory... Thanks for your kind answers ! -- Emmanuel

Low bitrate encoding
Hi, all. I'm new to this list, and I know that my question touches on a FAQ. I'm just hoping to get more information than "it's a priority item, but it's not done yet." (Basically what the FAQ says.) I've been encoding about 20 minutes of mono audio each week to as small a file as I can, so it can be served via html. As long as the result is understandable,

Suing Dell||Dull Computers for CID abuse

If Dell outsourcing calls me from India, the CLI must be their number in India not a faked-in number of some office in the US. That to me is exactly the purpose of this proposed law. It is equivalent to the law regarding FAX calls that has been
