Binc IMAP "IMAPdir" style layout
Hi, I'm in the process of migrating several years worth of mail to be accessible via an IMAP server. Some time ago, I evaluated both Binc IMAP and Dovecot and found Dovecot to be much faster on large folders, which is quite important to me. One thing I did not however manage to determine from the documentation on namespaces is whether or not it is possible to implement what Binc IMAP calls an "IMAPdir" style layout. IMAPd...

Namespaces
Hi all, I'm working to convert from a bincIMAP setup to a Dovecot setup. I've tried messing around with namespaces to make the conversion transparent, but I'm getting nowhere. Are namespaces necessary? Or can I proceed by recursively renaming the folders on the server? A transparent solution would be wonderful, but I can't g...

migration from bincIMAP
Hello all I am using Freebsd 4.10stable, postfix 2.1.5 with SASL and TLS, procmail version 3.22 and binc IMAP 1.2.8 binc uses IMAPdir style mail boxes, Spam assassin, and ClamAV. Wish to convert to dovecot but your program does not support IMAPdir does it??? also i have many user accounts that i wish to use untouched if possible. I guess this is a migration question for the most part i am switchi...

mbox vs maildir debate (was re: subject concerning binc imap, even though my original message never touched on it or maildir)
...coping with mbox stores, especially if I am trying to access the same mailbox with two different clients, whether intentionally or inadvertnetly. My hope is that Dovecot's POP3 server will prove just as robust at dealing with mailboxes that may also be open by an IMAP client. Whether Dovecot, BINC IMAP, or even Courier IMAP (or whichever POP3 server for that matter) are better for maildir or anything else, I will leave that debate to those who actually use them. In the end, I have made a choice. Not necessarily the best one, but I made the choice with the full understanding of what that ch...

Missing IMAP folders
Hi, I'm fresh starting to use dovecot. Before this I used bincimap, mainly because it was very simple to config. I've tried to find the FAQ's and tried searching the archives, but little came up. My current config: server FreeBSD i386, postfix 2.4 dovecot 1.0.10 client: windows 2000 thunderbird 2.0.0.12 after some inital config this st...

dovecot and pine tab-completion
Hello, So, I'm migrating from Binc to Dovecot, and one of my users has run into an odd complaint/issue. I don't know that it's a Dovecot issue necessarily, but maybe the people here know a fix anyway... The problem is that pine tab-completion now appends a "." to the end of folders that have sub-folders. In oth...

logging volumes
Hello! I?m in the process of migrating from BincIMAP to Dovecot, and I have a minor question. One of the things that Binc does is logs how many bytes of data it has sent as part of logging the log-out. Is there a way to get Dovecot to do that, or to calculate something similar? ~Kyle -- Racism is man's greatest threat to man---the maximu...

Indexes make Dovecot comparable to Cyrus in speed, but updating them isn't required so...

How many imap processes per user
Hi, I'm using dovecot for the first time on a production server (before dovecot I used bincimapd). I have a question about the number of imap (not imap-login) processes created for a user. I've seen 100+ processes for just 1 user. So far it only occurs for 1 user, other users have just 1 imap process. I now the user is using thunderbird and 2 mailclients are logged in at the s...

Dovecot NFS Indexes and IMAP Migration
...calculating an initial index for each account. First off, I can't seem to find any info on a way to create an initial index file for all of the mailboxes. Can anybody suggest a command I can use for this? I'm sure I just overlooked it. Regarding the migrations, we have both courier and bincimap to deal with. (We use qmail's pop, so no complications with migrating courier). Fortunately, courier is used for normal imap on 143, bincimap is only used for webmail. So, it would seem that metadata from bincimap could be ignored; the only thing it would seem important to preserve is m...
