...t. Sounds like you're missing
some very basic stuff.
Software dynamics processing is more involved than you might think. And
you'd be trying to use software to solve what is basically a hardware/user
problem.
Furman also makes total crap. You'd be much better off with one of the newer
Behringer units. Cheap but very functional. Though that doesn't negate the
need to take care of the basics mentioned above.

Run the signal through a Compressor/Limiter before sending it to your
soundcard. I use Behringer Ultra-Dyne Pro DSP9024. Very nice. If you
want to buy it look here:

Polycom wideband codecs?
Doing a little research before Friday's Voip Users Conference call with
Dan Behringer.
Are any of the newer Polycom wideband codecs implemented in v1.6?
Specifically, G.722.1 or G.722.2?
Thanks,
Michael Graves

Gain control
How are people doing gain control, out of curiosity?
I know boxes exist (anyone have names and mfrs?) that ride the gain
for big radio stations, ensuring that there is no distortion and
raising the volume of songs recorded at a lower volume. I'd probably
buy one if I knew what to buy.

I have had some minor success with the Behringer units. I bought
a "Composer Pro" and found that it have artifacts that are associated

Applying dynamic compression to live audio
Hi:
I want to stream audio from my soundcard, but I'd like to apply some
dynamic compression to it first (ala winamp's audiostocker plus shoutmuxer
thingy). I heard rumours of compression in liveice, but Iv'e been told
that this only works when it plays from prerecorded MP3, not the live
input. I'd like to do this with darkice, but can't see how it could be
done. I guess

a dedicated audio encoder
Hi,
In our design of Icecast2, our multiple sources will stream their high quality audio via a dedicated audio encoder (not a computer):
Live audio > L+R microphone > pre amplifier > audio encoder > Icecast2 VPS
So far I have a shortlist of 4 possible brands of audio encoders: Sonifex PS-SEND, Barix Instreamer, Bric-Link, Outcaster OC100.
All have their pro's and cons.

a dedicated audio encoder
...tive or negative experience with these or other brands, or perhaps even built one yourself (Raspberry..)?
well, sort of, with a PI, Ices2 as a client, and an USB audio device as
input, e.g. a "class compliant" audio recoder like Olympus LS5, Zoom H2
etc., but also a little mixer like the Behringer Xenyx 302 USB.
The problem i've encountered is with USB class1 devices, i.e. so called
"full speed" USB (which is the slowest one). It requires to force the
PI into USB1.1 at boot time, which affects the network stack and probably
others. The result is not satisfying, distorted so...

...will sell you their "combo" unit the "2020" for
about $5K retail.
If you want something cheaper (and of course not as good sounding)
there are a couple of companies that build "compressor/limiters"
boxes that run in the $150 range. The Alesis "3630" or the Behringer
"Composer Pro MDX2200" can do the job of hard/soft limiting and
even some AGC/compression so long as you don't push them too much.
If you are interested in a "how to" of setting up your new processing,
drop me a line.

so, I gave up (after years of intermittent battles) and bought a

It allegedly uses a TI PCM2902 chipset, which many online postings

LADSPA stands for Linux Audio Developer's Simple Plugin API (see

architectures and all were different. So they fleshed out a plugin API
