Subsetting data where the condition is that the value of some column contains some substring
...e input column is definitely character. To be double sure:
> subset(dataP, as.logical(length(grep("her", as.character(input))))==TRUE)
does the same thing.
Could somebody with more R experience than I have please explain what
I am doing wrong here? I'll be much obliged.

linking .lib and/or .dll files
Hi,
Linking C++ dynamic libraries has become the bane of my R life. I have a
piece of C++ code that I would like to make into a .dll (to call into R).
However, this piece of C++ code needs to be linked with a .dll or .lib -
which I have been created in Visual C++. Is it possible to link this for use
in R? If so, how do I go about doing this is MINGW?...

Errno::EBADF: Bad file descriptor - connect
Today this error is the bane of my existence.
It is weird. My app works fine when I am running it through Mongrel,
but as soon as I try to run a unit test, the test explodes with this
error.
Any ideas?

Blockiness
...the handful of standard VP3 videos I've tried.
Although I'm quite excited about Theora, I seriously hope that the problems with
blockiness are either limited to the current alpha version, or that the possible
problem with be resolved before the beta release. Blockiness is certainly the
bane of digital video, and I'm excited about Theora primarily because VP3 did
not show blockiness at even very low bitrates.

Random Dropped Called
I've got a 4 port T1 card in my Asterisk box with a PRI from Qwest as
my PSTN interface. I'm experiencing random dropped calls on the
various SIP devices I have tested. Network connectivity to the SIP
devices looks ok, and I have tried a variety of the devices including
all of the following.
Grandstream 286
Grandstresm 486
Sipura SPA 1000
Mediatrix 2102

6.2 still cannot get hdmi display out on Thinkpad P73 Quadro RTX 4000 Mobile/TU104
...o be using those ... a guess since I have neither.
HDMI ... I have had issues with Laps + HDMI when plugging the cable
into an already turn-on monitor. I have taken DVI-I > DP cables just to
see ... Next I didn't see any reference to Nvidia drivers is that your
option ? (I know, I live with bane of a "tainted kernel" because of
them and flop back and forth to see how Nouveau is progressing)
Either my eye's are getting worse or I missed what O/s your running ...
not sure that's the issue or drivers and possibly HDMI & TB.

I am not on systemd right now. I'm on CentOS 6.8. However, on an
openSUSE version I was. Sound problems were the bane of my existence
forever it seemed. So it maye take you a while to troubleshoot this.
Using JUST alsa you should be able to play sound files at the command
line. See:

converting an ASCII file to a matrix
Dear R-WinEdit users,
I got a simple question, but somehow I cannot find the answer, although
I have
tried a lot!
I got an ASCII-file and I want to import it into R, so that every
character is defined by [i;j].
The rows are not of the same length.
the file looks like the following shortened abstract example:
name: xxxxx xxxx
age: 9.9.99
record number: 999
title: xxxxx xxxx xxx
keywords: xxx xx

wierdness with mailboxes
Mail has always been the bane of my sys-admin life. I've been looking
long and hard for a small, C-based, simple IMAP server that worked well
with maildirs *and* mboxes and nothing else. wu-imap is so bloated and
rife with decrepit, cross-platform, insecure code that I avoid it for
any new servers. Courier-imap only support...

fsck - and there was much rejoicing
Looks like the fsck bug has been stomped! I did a 960G drive this morning,
and I'm 90% of the way through a 1.4T drive, both of which have *lots* of
files and hard links, and it has *not* hung at 70.1%, and is running at
reasonable speed.
Thanks to the folks who got this one. I *really* needed to do this, esp.
to our backup drives.

running existing windows programs in wine
I have an existing windows installation in dual-boot with archlinux. I'd really like to be able to run some windows programs within arch without rebooting, but I'm installed on an SSD so space is limited.
How can configure wine to run my programs from my windows partition within arch linux? I've been google searching for an answer to little avail.
Thanks for any help!

does rsync lock exclusively files to copy?
I'm running rsync 2.5.6 on windows (via cygwin) and I've had other processes try to open the same files as rsync, but could not get through sometimes. Does rsync place a shared lock or an exclusive lock on the files it will copy from?
I checked into the sources but did not find any use of flock() which could specify either LOCK_SH or LOCK_EX, so I'm not sure what the open() does when
