Changing a directory to a symlink; rsync balks.
Good day, all,
I'm using rsync 2.5.4 and a statically linked version of 2.5.5 to
back up my main system to a backup drive (See rsync-backup at
http://www.stearns.org/rsync-backup/ ).
First, I made a full backup of the system.
Then, on the main system, I merged the articles in techdocs
to another directory called articles, removed the techdocs directory and
made it a symlink to the

inst directory
R CMD check now balks at my inst directory. It contains a single folder
"doc," but apparently any folder causes the problem. If inst is empty,
the project checks OK. This was not a problem before 1.9. I've checked
the documentation, but don't see a change. What am I missing.

too many files open
Good morning Btrfs list,
I have been loading a btrfs file system via a script rsyncing data files
from an nfs mounted directory. The script runs well but after several
days (moving about 10TB) rsync reports that it is sending the file list
but stops moving data because btrfs balks saying too many files open. A
simple umount/mount fixes the problem. What am I flushing when I
remount that would affect this, and is there a way to do this without a
remount. Once again thanks for any assistance.

My company is a small software development shop and how has licenses as

Default Date storage 0000-00-00?
...9;' system. This
allows me to put in the due date and other info. However I wanted to put
in the default value of ''0000-00-00'' for the shipped date, as it hasn''t
shipped yet. Only Ruby won''t let me do that, it calls that value ''null''
and balks saying
"Mysql::Error: Column ''Ship_Date'' cannot be null..."
It is probably something obvious I am just overlooking. But Its been one
of those fridays and my mind is gone. So any help would be greatly
appreciated.

iSCSI best practices
...best if I created iSCSI drives for them back on my Oracle/Sun ZFS appliance.
I mentioned iSCSI to the guy whose work I have taken over here so that he
can concentrate on his real job, and when I mentioned that we should have a
separate switch so that all iSCSI traffic is on it's own switch, he balked
and said something like "it is a switched network, it should not matter".
But that does not sit right with me - the little bit I've read about iSCSI
in the past always stresses that you should have it on its own network.
So 2 questions :
- how important is it to have it on its own...

max.col
I am trying to run, in R -Windows95, the example in MASS2,
section 17.2. When I run predplot() on cush.lda I get

Error: couldn't find function "max.col"
I get the plot OK, but within predict(), it balks on max.col
A more general question about using VR. Is there an easy way
to use library on VR in general or do I have to move each into
the library folder and load each separately.
As always, thanks in advance.

I don't get this message if I use glm with family=binomial. It produces

If it's improper to do this for an ordinal variable, why does glm not

Dealing with Non-Standard Hours
A data set I obtained has the hours running from 01 through 24
rather than the conventional 00 through 23. My favorite, strptime,
balks at hour 24.
I thought it would be easy to correct but it must be too late on
Friday for my brain and caffeine isn't helping.
TIA for a hint,
Clint

I didn't like the inflexibility of mbox so I did a tweak to exim to

remember if I did anything to the dovecot.conf file.
My clients balk at the ssl certificate that was created at install time.
I see a little bit of documentation on SSL. I'll struggle with it.
I'm going to look at more client setups like evolution and a webmail

NT4 "at" jobs & samba
Hello:
All of my "at" jobs that write to a samba share (2.2.5) balk with
"access denied" errors. I have "force nt acl user = yes" on the share,
but this doesnt help. "access denied" only occurs when the batch jobs
run under "at". I can run the batch files successfully at the nt cmd
line. I can only guess that nt4 "...

isohybrid and partition type 0x17
...cgit/boot/syslinux/syslinux.git/commit/utils/isohybrid.in?id=aee4e8fa73571eaca80ad43aa007523cde5d4567
that the partition type was originally 0x83 (Linux), and was changed to
0x17 (hidden IFS) to satisfy windows.
I'm wondering what's the correct partition type to actually use. Does
windows balk if 0x96 is used? Should OFW be using 0x17, or should
isohybrid (and debian-installer) be using 0x96 for a partition table
containing an ISO-9660 filesystem?

converting a string to an integer vector
...or your help. I'm trying to convert a string to an
integer vector. For instance, I will start with
a <- "1,2"
The result I want to end up with will be the equivalent of
c(1,2)
What's the best way to make the conversion? I've tried using as.integer(a),
but R seems to balk at that.
Thanks,
Ben

Want non-ASCII characters in data package
...accented characters not available in the ASCII

I'd like to include this data frame as example data in an R package.
I'd also like the R CMD check warning about the use of non-ASCII
characters to go away, in part so I could submit the package somewhere
that wouldn't balk at the presence of the warning. (I gather from older
posts that there are environment variables to skip this check. Those
will work for me personally but will not necessarily appease the
maintainers of sites like CRAN where I might want to submit the package.)
Is there any way to use the corr...

cannot load package "splines"
Greetings R-Helpers:
I am trying to help a Chinese colleague who is experiencing difficulty

As you can see from his screen-copy (below), my package is successfully
unpacked but cannot be loaded because splines balks when attempted to be
loaded. Package mh1823 requires package survival, which in turn requires
splines.

[LLVMdev] Final Windows MinGW buildbot slave document...
...n of my Windows guide for how to
set up a MinGW buildbot slave. Please consider to include it in the
documentation on the LLVM website.
Basically, it saves the newcoming Windows user about two or three days of
experimentation to get it all working. I think those days are important as
many people balk at spending days on figuring out how to get flying when
all they want is to take a look at LLVM and then perhaps later on become
more and more involved with the dev group.
If you don't like the document and/or won't use it, I won't be saddened.
You can sanely argue that the document i...
