RE: XP Pro timeout; we have a winner - webclient service
Thanks to Jason Balicki for the correct fix to this problem.
The 'webclient' service in Windows XP, somehow interferes with access to the
Samba server. With the service stopped and disabled, the clients are
working again.

Changing file permissions in Windows XP with a samba PDC
Question about changing file permissions in Windows XP when running
samba as a PDC.
If you hit Properties and go to the security tab, instead of listing
the proper group/user names it lists the full SID.
Is there a way to get Windows XP to map these to the proper user/group names?
I am using LDAP as a backend with Samba.
Thanks.

Extremely slow during browsing some directories
hi,
I am quite new on using Samba and sorry maybe ask a silly question here. I
set up simple Samba server on Fedora3 using the samba rpm package comes with
fedora3( version 3.0.10-1.fc3). I use the SHARE security level to make
things easier. Everything goes fine so far, except that for some windows
user, some times, on browsing some directories, it takes extremely long time

XP Pro client cannot access stand-alone linux samba server
Hi, I am trying to set up my internet connection sharing linux box as a
stand-alone samba server. When i try to access the server from a
Windows XP Pro client using \\192.168.0.1 i get a dialog box asking for
a username and password. I duly enter this and the dialog box
immediately re-appears without connecting me to the share. There exists

samba as PDC in FreeBSD
Hello all, I've set up samba as a PDC in FreeBSD 5.1-release. I seemed to
have no problems joining my computer to the domain as it said "Welcome to
the domain" but when I try and log in it says it can't contact the domain
controller or the domain account doesn't exist. Can anyone offer any help on
how to fix this?
Here is my smb.conf.
Kind regards,

Monitoring File Use
Hello,
I'm very new to Linux and have a basic question. I am using Debian. Is
there a module I can load (either from dselect or from an outside
source) the will allow me to monitor file use on the network? Can this
be done within Webmin? Hope this is the right place for this question.
Thanks.

Any Windows XP SP2 RC2 Experience?
Earlier today I installed Windows XP SP2 RC2 onto
two of my production machines. My test boxes were
fine, but the two production machines I installed
them on failed to print in Adobe Reader and IE.
I've got a Samba 2.2.9 DC with a CUPS printing
backend.
Anyway, I've backed off the SP on both production
machines, and I'm going to try to replicate the
issue with another test box, but

Microsoft hotfix MS04-011, breaks Samba password change.
Hi all,
I wanted to give an update on this as I know this MS Hotfix
is critical and must be applied to protect against the (latest) Microsoft
worm.
I think I've found the problem in the code, and am currently testing
a fix for this (not in the release to others to test stage yet). As
soon as I'm reasonably confident I'll put a patch out there for others
to test, and we'll

Printer prints, but reports opening
We have a samba 2.2.3a-12.3 for Debian running, and something odd in
printing.
We use CUPs as linux print server. When we print from a w2k station,
prints come out the printer, but the printer window reports a cycle of
messages:
- initializing printer
- opening printer
- failed to open, retrying
what can be the cause?

XP 2.2.8a issues
I have some 30 XP boxes in one offices joined to a w2k domain. The w2k
server has no problem mapping drives on the samba server, however, the
XP workstations refuse. Put in user name and password in the box after
mapping, and it just pops back up like you've entered a wrong pass/user
name. I have changed signorseal to 0 in registry to no avail. Of
course, when the server was NT4, I

Mixed Network Issues
Howdy Super Samba Subscribers!
I'm looking for a little advice on trouble-shooting our network. We
have several large unix partitions that are shared via samba and act as
our central file stores. Most of our development machines are Linux or
Unix systems. Some of our business people use mixed flavors of
Windows. Mostly Windows XP however we have a few older Windows OSs as
well.

Latest windows patches have screwed up samba
Others have posted already about this, but so far nobody
in the know has responded:
I am getting an invalid error message when changing user passwords
from the client machine (for example, by using ctl-alt-del and
selecting "change password") from at least one Windows XP pro
workstation (my own -- I have yet to escelate this further, in case
I figure out that it's something simple.)
