Dovecot altmove questions
...B? In the alternate area should only be "old" mail (1 year older).
3? We have separate raids for indexes (raid 1+0) and mdboxes (raid 5). We have almost 3 TB of gzipped mdboxes, and our backup (bacula) is taking almost 16 hours to make a full backup. Our main problem is that indexes are backupd hours before mdboxes, and that bring us some inconsistencies. What is the "right" way of backing up for separate indexes and mdboxes?
Thank you for your support.

Floating Point Exception
I have a Fedora Core server running:
Fedora Core release 4 (Stentz)
kernel version: 2.6.15-1.1833_FC4smp
( I have also tried kernel version: 2.6.16-1.2108_FC4smp)
I compiled the ocfs2 and ocfs2-tools using the following steps:
# MODULES:
tar zxvpf ocfs2-1.2.1.tar.gz
cd ocfs2-1.2.1
./configure
make
make install
# TOOLS:
tar zxf ocfs2-tools-1.2.1.tar.gz
cd ocfs2-tools-1.2.1

Samba/Unicode
...ntains Unicode file names, ls shows
question marks in file names (my Linux box locale is set to en-US.UTF8.)
And rsync fails to grab the files with such names, but on error messages it
prints, the characters in file names look like rubbish. Here's an example:
file has vanished:
"/srv/backupd/mnt/GHAFIRI/E_drive$/NewServerHD/D/ã?íñ/í??? ¤ñ? ???ò??
????.doc"
(Simply copied from a putty ssh shell to the Linux box.)
I'm wonderring how can I mount the Windows shares in a way that Samba
represents the correct file names correctly. I've browsed through the docs
at samba.org...

Howto test upgrades?
...loyment. These things come in mind:
- sysvol replication integrated
- automatic promoting/joining/replicating etc. I never wan't to be
bothered using samba-tool for normal replicated setup - One namespace in
config should do the trick.
- integrated backup tool for everything that needs to be backupd to
bring up the same domain with one command: samba import backup
Not to get me wrong a lot of issues are already been working on and a
lot of things have been simplified.
Samba should feel more like i.e. MongoDB where it is trivial to add and
remove instances dynamically, making backups, but...

Howto test upgrades?
Hi,
maybe this thread should ask an even more general question:
How are AD-DC admins supposed to test upgrades? If there is more than
one AD-DC, an upgraded DC which causes problems cannot (must not) be
restored from backup. This is one of the reasons why I do not want to
switch to AD. A PDC *can* simply be restored from backup. It is even
enough to switch back to the previous contents of

Incremental backups?
So I thought I'd get a head start for next week -
I have a low-power Linux box that has a few samba shares mounted, and
limited hard disk space. This box is connected to a tape library via
SCSI card.
I want to find the best way to create a full, then incremental backup of
the samba mounts, directly to tape. Some of the samba mounts are
appliances that cannot run any special

I use:

tar cvlbf 512 /dev/nst0 \

--listed-incremental /home/root/backup/incremental_logfile \

A full backup is done once every week, followed by daily incremental
backups: This is controlled by the tape status. Every Monday we
replace the tapes in the robot. So when no tape is loaded in the
drive this signals that a full backup must be done.
To make a full backup, I sim...
