I don't think rdiff-backup would work with rotated drives - not really.
You could make it work to some extent with some cumbersome gimmicks, but
not perfectly. I found this thread on the subject:
http://www.backupcentral.com/phpBB2/two-way-mirrors-of-external-mailing-lists-3/rdiff-backup-23/rdiff-backup-and-rotated-external-drives-122523/
But why rotate drives? Big drives are not very expensive nowadays.

bug in smbclient (?) 4.2.x
I posted this to the amanda-users ml earlier today, as I run several
amanda backup servers and hit this issue again today.
->
"I have to upgrade to samba-4.2.11 (gentoo linux) on an amanda server
running amanda-3.4.1
Does anyone know if this:
http://www.backupcentral.com/forum/16/263253
... is still an issue?"

my interpretation: samba-4.2.11 / smbclient has problems with german
umlauts etc ?
It could be some effect between amanda and samba as well, sure.

So far I kept that one server locked at samba-3.6.25, the priority was
having valid backup...

This is an example IMHO of a badly written error message, since the
name/password pair are valid, but somehow the validation is going wrong.
I don't see anything in the system logs to help pinpoint the problem.
