A backhanded compliment for OpenSSH
We recently commissioned a new WAN. Us IT folks have been using it for months, using ssh and scp to configure systems, copy files etc. It all worked perfectly, across Linux, FreeBSD and nanoBSD systems. We opened the WAN to our regular (Windows) application traffic, and it promptly fell into a screaming heap. Days of chaos ensued, until we found that ethernet duplex/speed mismatches with the

Using XmlSimple to parse XML strings
I am using XmlSimple to parse an XML string received from a remote host. I am getting the error message, "File does not exist: .". I am fairly well convinced that the problem is that XmlSimple is not recognizing the received XML string as being valid XML and is therefore looking for a file by that name (which, of course, does not exist). The XmlSimple documentation says that it

BIG delete list makes for BIGGER RAM requirements

I've never been able to capture exac...

Load Balancing
Hi, We are starting a new project, and are trying to decide the best way to proceed. We want to setup a LAMP configuration using Centos, something we have been doing in the past with great success. The question is load balancing. We antisipate the potential for the system to receive 500,000 requests/ day with in the next year. We want to plan for that extra load now as we start the

quotation marks and scan
Dear R People: I'm sure that this is a very simple problem, but I have been wresting with it for some time. I have the following file that has the following one line: CRS("+init=epsg:28992") Fair enough. I scan it into R and get the following: > u [1] "CRS(\"+init=epsg:28992\")" > gsub(pattern='\"',replacement='"',x=u) [1]

What FileSystems for large stores and very very large stores?
I was learning about the different FS exists. I was working on systems that ReiserFS was the star but since there is no longer support from the creator there are other consolidations to be done. I want to ask about couple FS options. EXT4 which is amazing for one node but for more it's another story. I have heard about GFS2 and GlusterFS and read the docs and official materials from RH on

2.2 release imminent.
Well, as Andrew shouted at me again this weekend it's getting to be about that time.... :-) :-). Yep, we're thinking we should do an official 2.2 Samba release early next week, so if you have anything you can't live with, now would be a good time to tell us.... :-). It's been gestating longer than an elephant, so it's really time to let it out into the world and do its own

MySQL vs SQLite
I have an application where speed is probably the #1 priority here. I am using MySQL 5.0.22. Would SQL be considerably faster than MySQL? I know this has been discussed before, but the search on the forums is not working. Thanks for your help. -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.
