[SUGGESTION] WINE, autodisable/ask to disable PulseAudio
Since PulseAudio causes much trouble alot, why not make WINE to either
1) autodisable
2) ask to disablePulseAudio when running something ?
By my understanding if this would be implemented, either of the following is done:
1) When executing wine theprogramname.exe it first calls to WINE, which then query the system for PA. Then if PA is found, WINE adds padsp to the commandline and continues

Alsa audio -- FYI update
Alsa audio started working a couple of days ago with wine and then stopped working yesterday.
Here is my experience.
Pulseaudio cannot be removed any more. So I reinstalled the system and left it there.
I compiled wine git and installed, and then installed DNS 10.
Then I re-booted, ran killall pulseaudio in terminal, and started the program with winecfg's sound set to alsa.
Everything

progress of sound update -- REVISED
...ySpeaking.
Yesterday's Ubuntu updates produced a rash of pulseaudio changes, and suddenly alsa works with wine, without stumbling.
Today's secret to making it work:
In System/Preferences/Startup applications, uncheck pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install esound
sudo nano /etc/pulse/client.conf
autospawn = no
Then every time your computer starts, run killall pulseaudio in terminal first.
(Because the Startup Applications menu doesn't really work.)
I trained and ran Dragon NaturallySpeaking without a problem.
I also tried oss yesterday, and that seemed to be working again, too. I usually follo...

C7, pulseaudio, multi-user setup
...my default user, and in
that desktop, I run apps from other users using sudo, su. It appears
that apps started using sudo or in terminals+su, can't play sound:
[pulseaudio] main.c: User-configured server at {f7ac68929370425d82f882c116a21597}unix:/run/user/1000/pulse/native, refusing to start/autospawn.
User 1000 is my default user. I've searched and read a lot about this
topic, and found many suggestions but none works so far.
What's the correct way to allow all users to play sound in my default
user's desktop session? Adding them all to the audio group doesn't seem
to be enoug...

Help with Pulseaudio Disabling?
I was trying to disable pulseaudio as per the instructions given here http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=1457 and I have terminal-usage-newbie type question.
I've uncommented and changed the autospawn part now I need to leave the client.conf, right?
I can't just 'X' out because it keeps giving me a pop up that says I'd be terminating a ongoing process (or can I?).
At the bottom is something along the lines of...
Code:
^X Exit
Amidst some other similarly phrased options.

sound not working
...about your issue.
Mike Freeman and I have the same problem. When I use the change you provided I don't have the old alsa tools any more, including alsamixer, and I need those.
Also, I was doing fine just killing pulseaudio at startup and modifying the /opt/pulse/client.conf script to disable autospawn. I think the work-around is probably not necessary for what I need.
I tried the workaround because of audio problems that developed within the past couple of days, but the problems seem to be with wine, and not anything to do with the pulseaudio interface. Because I was using alsa before, and alsa...

No sound on ThinkPad -- mixer issue
...r control found on ThinkPad Console Audio Control, disabling mixer
So it appears that my mixer is disabled.
The only Mixer Device shown in winecfg's Audio / ALSA Driver / Mixer Devices is "HDA Intel."
FYI -- My configuration -- pulseaudio is disabled and /etc/pulse/client.conf has autospawn turned off. I have audio in Linux programs, including Audacity.
Is there a work-around for this? Or is it a bug?

No Audio Control Panel Implemented
After hours of searching, I give up and will ask for directions.
runing wine 1.1.27 on Ubuntu 9.04 on a T-23 Thinkpad using the onboard sound card and a Plantronics DSP-500 headset. After days of searching I finally got both to work, but limitation in Ubuntu will not allow both to work at the "same time". One or the other. Plantronics only works in a mixed mode ALSA and OSS

No sound in Wine 1.3.37 (tried known solutions already)
...Note: command 'wine regsvr32 dsound.dll' returned status 255. Aborting.
2) Starting Wine with pasuspender. Doesn't help.
3) Killing pulseaudio process. I set autospawn = no in the config to prevent it from restarting. Doesn't help. Event with pulseaudio daemon not running, aplay, speaker-test and KDE system sounds work without a problem, so does sound test in winecfg, but games started in Wine still have no sound.
What am I doing wrong?

pulseaudio/wine question
When people have audio trouble with programs in wine the first
suggestion is always to remove pulseaudio, I'm not questing that - it
often fixes the problem, but I do wonder if there are plans to make wine
and pulseaudio work better together?
Each new version of the major Linux distros seems to make pulse harder
and harder to remove without messing up the system. Outside of wine
pulse is

Steam Games Don't Work. Please Help!
I bought a new computer for myself, and installed Kubuntu on it. I installed Steam on it, bought the orange box, tried to run TF2, and it didn't work. When I started it up, t showed the VALVE logo and played their little jingle, showed the Source logo, then the screen went blank and nothing happened :x . It opened it in the Konsole (Terminal) and it gave me this when the screen (on the desktop

Pulse audo in 1.3.25+
So I used to use the winepulse patch for wine. (Yes I like pulse). But
since 1.3.25+ uses mmdevapi for audio, that patch no longer works. That
author points to a wine multimedia git, however, after installing that I
have no more sound in any wine application, and the winecfg test audio says
audio failed. How do I get this new sound server working in wine?
