Most of the useful audacity stuff is in their wiki: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/USB_mic_on_Linux seems like a good place to start.

If I install it, I guess I'll have to do it from source. I'm not really looking to do much interesting with audio. Eventually I expect to inst...

Way to specify alsa sound device on command line?
Is there an environment variable I can specify the alsa sound device with? I read the documentation but could only find such options for OSS: http://www.winehq.org/docs/wineusr-guide/x258#AEN333 I want to run a tool with wine and captute the sound, like described here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Recording_audio_playing_on_the_computer#Using_the_ALSA_PCM_file If there is a way, please update the docs as well ;) Thanks in advance.

Audacity still uses VS2008 and slowly tries to migrate to VS2012. But as stated at <http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Developing_On_Windows>, "Audacity is currently a 32-bit only application". So it doesn't need 64-bit builds. Currently its trunk contains 'audacity.sln' made with Visual C++ Express 2008 and 'audacity-vs2012_EXPERIMENTAL.sln' made with Visual Studio Express...

To sum up: - situation regarding licensing fees when using LAME as an encoder is unknown. - situation regarding licensing fees for broadcasting in MPEG 1 layer 3 format...

USB audio on Centos-7
I'm using Centos-7 on my PC, with ASUS motherboard. internal audio has always worked fine EXCEPT that I can never get audio input (for recording) to work. I want to feed audio from a phono turntable and from a cassette deck. I use a phono preamp for the turntable, or directly connect the tape deck. but either nothing, or low level with horrible distortion. so, I gave up (after years of

Bug: incompatibility with MSVS 2005
src/libFLAC/memory.c cannot be compiled with MSVS 2005 (and probably VS2008 too) after this commit: http://git.xiph.org/?p=flac.git;a=commitdiff;h=7cbecbae9f70be770f7651d09531fec0de6f9cf5 because MSVS2005 doesn't provide stdint.h. According to MSDN, uintptr_t is defined in "STDDEF.H and other include files".

how do I make my headset work
How do I make my headset work. Before I try it with anything else, I'd like to make it work with arecord and aplay. VLC and movie player can make sounds with my external speakers. though not in my headset yet. I've got an insignia NS-PAH5101 headset. As directed, the red connector is in the pink spot and the green connector in green spot in the back of my computer. arecord folloed by aplay

Compiling static libFLAC.a still requires libogg.dylib
Thanks for the reply. I would very much like OGG container support, so disabling it isn't really an option. I have built OGG so that it creates a libogg.a, libogg.0.dylib and a symbolically linked libogg.dylib (that links to the libogg.0.dylib) file. If I remove the .dylib files in an attempt to 'encourage' the compiler to use libogg.a, then it complains that it can't find the

Mac OS X Intel assembly
Flac uses assembly code to improve performance for ix86 processors. This works under Linux, BSD and Windows, but not Mac OS X, because there is no support for creating Mach-O format binaries (the native binary format for OS X systems). The attached patch provides the necessary support to create ASM-optimised Mach-O binaries. This wasn't created by me but was sent to the audacity-devel list (I
