Easy security administration?
Hello. I've got several clients using samba (ranging from 2.2.1a to 2.2.5) as their primary windows server. The question has come up with clients about ease of administration and security rights for samba. Currently, the only way I've been able to show clients how to manipulate security settings and restrict users from certian shares is to use write and read lists per share, or create

Reloading Smb.conf automatically?
Just a few quick questions: If I make changes to smb.conf, do I need to restart the SMB and NMB services, or is it like Vixie Cron, where it'll re-read the file and adapt changes every minute? Why do I have multiple NMB instances running, but only one SMB? Thanks for the help! Aton

'Access denied' when moving files
Hello. I've got a Windows 2000 Pro Sp2 client using Samba 2.2.4-2 on Red Hat Linux 7.3. I've ran chmod 777 * +R on the directory that samba shares; sharing is set as 'share' security. Lots of times, when I move video files from my local hard drive on the Windows 2000 machine to the samba share (mapped to a drive letter, not a UNC), I get an "Access denied, the source file may

Profiles and automatic drive mappings
Hello, I have a mixed network of 98 and 2000 machines with RH 7.3 and Samba 2.2.5 The problem I'm having is my logon scripts contain a drive map to the user's home directory: net use H: \\server01\dave$ That works great for the 98 machines, but the 2000 machines map H: and Z: to \\server01\dave$ The 2000 machines also write a profile dirctory in that share, and copy the entire desktop

Sage Line 50
Hi all, I am attempting to get Sage to support their software if the files are on Samba (Linux). They (like a lot of people I've heard) say "We don't support Linux, Goodbye." even when the client is on Win98/NT. We have been having trouble on a particular site, and they refuse to support Sage Line 50 if the files are on Linux which is absurd, because Linux is much more

Profiles and local profile copy
Hello. Whenever I attach a 2000 Pro workstation to a Samba server, a directory is created under the user's home directory called "profile", and the local profile syncs with this directory. Its not usually bothersome until someone leaves 2 GIG of data on their desktop and when they logoff, Windows syncs the entire 2 GIG of data to the server. How do I disable this? Attaching a 2000

something wrong with mongrel?
Hi all, I''ve followed http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/UsingMongrel for configuring my puppet with mongrel. Al seems to work fine, except that, after a reinstall of 40 nodes atone time, I got many kind of errors like: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- err: Could not request certificate: Certificate retrieval failed: .tmp file already exists for /var/lib/puppet/ssl/ca/serial; Aborting locked write. Check the .tmp file and delete if app...

Multiple lines on Linksys/Sipura phones
I'm going to be deploying around 30 IP phones with Asterisk in the near future. I've tentatively settled on the Linksys/Sipura SPA9xx family. I am unclear on the notion of "lines" in the context of SIP phones like these. The SPA942 model has a 2-line-to-4-line upgrade available, but I don't know why I'd need to purchase it. I have tested a SPA942 with Asterisk, and

DNS error connecting to Domain
Hello, I have a Windows 2000 Pro SP3 Laptop, and a RH 7.3 server running Samba 2.2.5. One day it refused to connect to the domain, said it wasn't available, couldn't access \\server01\user\profile directory, and refused to browse the samba server. Reboots didn't work. I unjoined the domain, and it complained that it could not remove the machine account from the server. After I

slow logon (and logoff) to Samba PDC
One of my Win2000 clients takes about 5 minutes to logon (and logoff) my Samba PDC. Other Win2000 clients are fine so this may not be samba related but wanted to ask anyhow. I have turned off the "enable offline folders" on the Win2000 machine so their is no synchronization stuff going on. What else should I do ???

Merry Christmas, all Asterisk users!
It's the day before Christmas here in Sweden, actually the night before at this time... We celebrate Xmas on the 24th, so I'm about to log off and switch my Asterisk into "merry-christmas-mode" with the yet undocumented CLI command "frosty-mode on", a mode where the PBX will connect all incoming extensions to the "ho-ho-ho" sound file and then randomly pick a

Have you run "tuned-adm profile throughput-performance" ?

I'd be surprised if it did, but now that you mention it, I think that we should probably mention more often that

Can't write QuickBooks file to Samba share
On a server that has been running smoothly since it was setup, and with no changes to configurations or network or anything, users cannot save a shared QuickBooks file. they have been regularly using, updating and saving to this file for a few months. All users are able to create and update other files in the same share. I have not confirmed if they are able to create and update new QuickBooks

Oplocks - samba 2.2.4 & Windows 2000 server
In investigating some performance issues (elderly server with just 10Mbps ethernet), I noticed that smbstatus reported hardly any open files with oplocks. In particular files opened with Office 2000 & XP stay un-oplocked. I have checked and testparm claims oplocks are enabled and manual says this is so by default. The clients are all Windows 2000 servers - so we have 1 samba connection with

Samba binding to two IPs, even when specified not to
Hello. I'm running RH 7.1, with Samba 2.2.2. VERY often I get a SIGHUP to smbd and it'll dump the workgroups. I also get a "Discarding datagram from IP 216.202.200.103. Source name ROUTER<00> is one of our names" all the time also. This line FILLS my logs. I don't understand this one, because I have the interfaces line specified in smb.conf to use only the local

hashing Hosts in ssh_config file
Hello, I hope this isn't a stupid question, but after editing my sshd_config file to set HashKnownHosts to 'yes' after this feature was recently added it occured to me that many of those same hosts are listed in "Hosts" lines in my ssh_config file. (The servers I connect to use different ports and require different IdentityFiles, so I set the appropriate options for each
