Service resource does not seem to be disabling service on reboots
Hi folks, The question I have is regarding to Service resource on Red Hat systems. I have the following: service { [ "anacron", "atd" ]: ensure => stopped, enable => false, hasrestart => true, hasstatus => true, } It runs fine, disabling the service while the system is up. Debugging it, I noticed that it run the following: debug: Service[atd](provider=redhat): Executing '...

Constant disk activity
Hi, I am running centos on a laptop and the HD keeps on making noises every so often, even when I go to runlevel 1 and stop everything that could be doing so (hotplug, smartd, cron, anacron, atd, syslogd...). Is there any way of finding out what is accessing the disk? Not only it shortens battery life, it is annoying while working in a quiet room. xen backports, sarge dom0 problem
...the sage-au mailing lists, but not had any answers at all. I can boot into the system, but the boot process seems to freeze during the /etc/rc2.d/S* scripts. It used to freeze while executing /etc/rc2.d/S20xfs. I worked around that by uninstalling xfs. Now it freezes while executing /etc/rc2.d/S89atd. That is alot closer to the end of the startup scripts, so it is tempting to disable atd somehow, to get it to see if it will boot. But I can't help thinking there is some underlying problem here, which disabling atd won't solve. When it does stall, ctrl-c doesn't kill the script, but...

what writes to /root/.cache/mesa ?
Dear All, I have several CentOS 7 machines (but not all of them) on which I have noticed that something gets written to /root/.cache/mesa every so often (once every several days). It is my understanding that mesa is related to GUI (X11), but on these machines (on neither of my machines, actually) root never logs in to GUI X11. I may have remote root logins with Xforwarding though. Hence my

Debian sarge in domU
Hi I installed xen-unstable on a debian sarge. The domain0 works good. Also a domU with the ttylinux installed as it is described in the manual. In a second domU I installed a sarge as it is described. This linux starts until the crond starts: [...] Starting deferred execution scheduler: atd. Starting periodic command scheduler: cron. then it takes a while an this messages appears: INIT: Id "tty1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel And I don''t get a login promt. If I boot in singl-user mode I can login as root...

Booting problem after update, how to track order of starting services
Hi. I have updated system/server that worked for a long time. It was upgrade from 6.4 to latest. After restart, system freezes after most/all of the daemons are booted. From interactive mode I found out that services starting are: ... ... atd jexec atieventsd libvirtd certmonger libvirt-guests local nxsensor nxserver webmin As soon as I allow webmin to pass, system freezes. BUT, if I stop after nxserver, and leave booting process at question weather to start webmin, and I login via SSH, I can start webmin. Question is how I find out...

Is UPSD necessary for average users?
...change settings to '127.0.0.1', or that is also done because of what is easier to spoof... but I have even seen someone on IRC with a hostmask like 'username at 127.0.0.1'. I would still like to know if running UPSD on a port is essential, rather than not having a port... crond and atd, for example, do not need ports, so why would UPSD?

...the latest RPM does, https://paste.fedoraproject.org/paste/MS~7Fkr5AWYo7SAWAl8t6A ) I also manage private repos (with pulp) of the Google Chrome repos, in case I need to go back to a previous version, so having it overwrite my repositories is actually damaging. I also disable 'at' and the atd service on our workstations, and this RPM turns atd back on and schedules an at job to run the /etc/cron.daily/google-chrome script. It's an absurd RPM and Google should be ashamed of it. -- Jonathan Billings <billings at negate.org>

R-beta: losing attributes in binary ops
Thanks to Thomas Lumley for the very quick fix of the NextMethod(.Generic) bug. The patch enclosed in his message to r-help fixed that problem nicely. But..., I've got another one. x <- 1:4 attr(x,"foo") <- "bar" attributes(x < 4) returns NULL. The "foo" attribute has been lost in the "x < 4" operation. The blue book says that the
