ATAPI boot loader
Hi,
I'm trying to write short ATAPI driver (boot loader) to avoid poor BIOS.
It should get in single CD sector so it could even work with bad BIOSes.
It could also provide correct root device to the kernel.
Is someone interested in using such loader?

Can this work?
I would like to develop a system where by I can boot any of the
machines on my system - and select from a menu what I would like that
particular client to do. For example, maybe load a bootdisk image from
a network share, and boot that. Or boot the first partition on the
local disk.

Boot hangs on v9 system at CD device probe
...ils to boot. The boot
freezes after probing for my hard drives during the probe of the
CDROM. It just sits there, seemingly forever, though I have never
waited longer then a few minutes.
The system is a SuperMicro C25BX mother board. The DVD is PATA,
reported on boot of 8-Stable as:
acd0: DVDR <ATAPI DVD A DH20A4P/9P59> at ata2-master UDMA66
If I unplug the CDROM, it boots fine, but I really need the device on
the system, so I really can't leave it unplugged. Also, after the 9
kernel is installed, my Mk file have been updated so that I can't
build some ports if I boot the 8.2 kernel...

Slow disk access on Dell Latitute with ATA/ATAPI-5 T13 1321D
Hi...
I have a Dell Latitute with an ATA/ATAPI-5 T13 1321D and it would seem
that my disk access is extremely slow. I have the latest updated kernel
from RedHat 8.0 kernel 2.4.18-27.8.0. Somehow I think it is related to
the UDMA stuff (shows my level of understanding). I have run hdparm and
although I think I should at least udma level 5, I...

Booting from ZIP 750 ...
Hi!
Is anybody able to boot FreeBSD 5.x-STABLE from a ATAPI ZIP 750 .?
I tried to, but it didn't work.
I mounted the ZIP from a running 5.X-STABLE and made the normal release
procedure (installworld / installkernel .). I also gave bootcfg a try. But
nothing helped.
Or is there no way of booting a FreeBSD 5.X-STABLE from ZIP?
Yours

Pioneer DVD-120s probe problem
...llo, I'm building a new system for a friend and I bought a
Pioneer DVD-120s drive for him because it was a newer version of the
drive I use (DVD-116) and my friend uses (DVD-106s) with FreeBSD. The
problem is that FreeBSD cannot probe the drive for some reason. I've
tried twiddling the ATAPI_DMA bit, rescanned the drive, and toyed with
the cable, but nothing seems to work.
The BIOS can see the drive, in fact I can boot FreeBSD using the
El-Torrito boot sector on the drive, but I cannot use the CD as the
distribution in the installer.
FreeBSD 4.8-RELEASE boots all the way up to the...

Re: Migrate Win2k3 to KVM
Hi,
The error line is:
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF789AA94, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
Nothing more! (Of course there are some inrelevant text line about chkdsk,
etc.)

Setting CDROM parms
My apologies in advance for asking such an elementary question. I
called myself searching the Installation Guide and Deployment Guide,
with no success.
The situation is that I bought a Lite-On ATAPI iHAP122 that will not
burn DVDs unless I use hdparm to turn dma off. I bought that drive
because it was a rare beige drive. Until I can find a decent DVD burner
and/or get a Windows machine put together strictly for doing BIOS
updates, running with dma disabled seems to be the best solution....

Newbie problems with isolinux
Hello everybody
I would like to build a bootable CD from my running SuSE 7.3 Kernel 2.4.10.
The goal is to have a prebuilt system on CD which would install everything
from a compressed image on the same CD, some kind of an emergency or
initial setup CD.
So I startet with an directory called root_tree, placed the isolinux
directory and the binaries there. I copied the initrd from the /boot

will syslinux work on a harddisk ?
...device that plugs into the IDE connector
on the motherboard, and i'm trying to get syslinux to work
with it, so I can load a Linux kernel and an initrd.
I'm not having any luck with it.
Then it dawned on me that the boot loader in syslinux might
be expecting a floppy drive rather than an atapi hard disk.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
