ZFS Write Performance Issues
We seem to be having write issues with zfs, does anyone see anything in the following: bash-3.00# kstat -p -n arcstats zfs:0:arcstats:c 655251456 zfs:0:arcstats:c_max 5242011648 zfs:0:arcstats:c_min 655251456 zfs:0:arcstats:class misc zfs:0:arcstats:crtime 5699201.4918501 zfs:0:arcstats:data_size 331404288 zfs:0:arcstats:deleted 408216 zfs:0:arcstats:demand_data_hits 4316945 zfs:0:arcstats...

arcstat updates
Hi ZFSers, I''ve been working on merging the Joyent arcstat enhancements with some of my own and am now to the point where it is time to broaden the requirements gathering. The result is to be merged into the illumos tree. arcstat is a perl script to show the value of ARC kstats as they change over time. This is similar to the ideas behind mpstat, iostat, vmstat, and friends. The current

ARCSTAT Kstat Definitions
Would someone "in the know" be willing to write up (preferably blog) definitive definitions/explanations of all the arcstats provided via kstat? I''m struggling with proper interpretation of certain values, namely "p", "memory_throttle_count", and the mru/mfu+ghost hit vs demand/prefetch hit counters. I think I''ve got it figured out, but I''d really like expert clarification...

kernel memory and zfs
We have a 32 GB RAM server running about 14 zones. There are multiple databases, application servers, web servers, and ftp servers running in the various zones. I understand that using ZFS will increase kernel memory usage, however I am a bit concerned at this point. root at servername:~/zonecfg #mdb -k Loading modules: [ unix krtld genunix specfs dtrace uppc pcplusmp ufs md mpt ip indmux ptm

zfs read performance degrades over a short time
I appear to be seeing the performance of a local ZFS file system degrading over a short period of time. My system configuration: 32 bit Athlon 1800+ CPU 1 Gbyte of RAM Solaris 10 U6 SunOS filer 5.10 Generic_137138-09 i86pc i386 i86pc 2x250 GByte Western Digital WD2500JB IDE hard drives 1 zfs pool (striped with the two drives, 449 GBytes total) 1 hard drive has

ZFS Prefetch Tuning
...oracle zones sharing the data and logs pools. I think that the prefetch will be useful on the apps and backup pools, however I think that on the data and logs pools this could be causing issues with the amount of IO that is being caused by the prefetch and the amount that it is missing in the arcstats could be the reason why the devices are at 100% busy. Is there a way to turn the prefetch off for just a single pool? Also is this something that can be done online or will it require a reboot to put into effect. Thanks in advance for your assistance in this matter. Regards Tony -- Oracle &l...

sub-optimal ZFS performance
Hello, ZFS is behaving strange on a OSOL laptop, your thoughts are welcome. I am running OSOL on my laptop, currently b124 and i found that the performance of ZFS is not optimal in all situations. If i check the how much space the package cache for pkg(1) uses, it takes a bit longer on this host than on comparable machine to which i transferred all the data. user at host:/var/pkg$ time

Monitoring ZFS host memory use
Hi, Please forgive me if my searching-fu has failed me in this case, but I''ve been unable to find any information on how people are going about monitoring and alerting regarding memory usage on Solaris hosts using ZFS. The problem is not that the ZFS ARC is using up the memory, but that the script Nagios is using to check memory usage simply sees, say 96% RAM used, and alerts. The

mdb ::memstat including zfs buffer details?
Hey all - Just a quick one... Is there any plan to update the mdb ::memstat dcmd to present ZFS buffers as part of the summary? At present, we get something like: > ::memstat Page Summary Pages MB %Tot ------------ ---------------- ---------------- ---- Kernel 28859 112 13% Anon 34230

Tracking down the causes of a mysteriously shrinking ARC cache?
I have a test Solaris machine with 8 GB of memory. When freshly booted, the ARC consumes 5 GB (and I would be happy to make it consume more) and file-level prefetching works great even when I hit the machine with a lot of simultaneous sequential reads. But overnight, the ARC has shrunk to 2 GB (as reported by arcstat.pl) and file-level prefetching is (as expected at that level) absolutely

ZFS slows down over a couple of days
Hi all, I have exchanged my Dell R610 in favor of a Sun Fire 4170 M2 which has 32 GB RAM installed. I am running Sol11Expr on this host and I use it to primarily serve Netatalk AFP shares. From day one, I have noticed that the amount of free RAM decereased and along with that decrease the overall performance of ZFS decreased as well. Now, since I am still quite a Solaris newbie, I seem to

UNEXPECTED SOFT UPDATE INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY

Ok, so I ran fsck manually (even with -y), but yet it refuses to clear/fix whatever to the questions posed as fsck runs. What does this all mean? ZFS/ARC consuming all memory on heavy reads (w/ dedup enabled)
Greetings Gentlemen, I''m currently testing a new setup for a ZFS based storage system with dedup enabled. The system is setup on OI 148, which seems quite stable w/ dedup enabled (compared to the OpenSolaris snv_136 build I used before). One issue I ran into, however, is quite baffling: With iozone set to 32 threads, ZFS''s ARC seems to consume all available memory, making

ZFS behavior under limited resources
I am trying to see how ZFS behaves under resource starvation - corner cases in embedded environments. I see some very strange behavior. Any help/explanation would really be appreciated. My current setup is : OpenSolaris 111b (iSCSI seems to be broken in 132 - unable to get multiple connections/mutlipathing) iSCSI Storage Array that is capable of 20 MB/s random writes @ 4k and 70 MB random reads

Occasional storm of xcalls on segkmem_zio_free
So I have this dual 16-core Opteron Dell R715 with 128G of RAM attached to a SuperMicro disk enclosure with 45 2TB Toshiba SAS drives (via two LSI 9200 controllers and MPxIO) running OpenIndiana 151a4 and I''m occasionally seeing a storm of xcalls on one of the 32 VCPUs (>100000 xcalls a second). The machine is pretty much idle, only receiving a bunch of multicast video streams and

ZFS memory and swap usage
Greetings, all. Does anyone have a good whitepaper or three on how ZFS uses memory and swap? I did some Googling, but found nothing that was useful. The reason I ask is that we have a small issue with some of our DBA''s. We have a server with 16GB of memory, and they are looking at moving over databases to it from a smaller system. The catch is that they are moving to 10g. Oracle
