Alert icon for yum
Hi all. I have a simple question: CentOS relies mostly on "yum" to keep systems up to date, although I understand that like on RHEL, "up2date" is also available. On my system I've run both KDE and GNOME as Graphical Desktops under X (though I presently run GNOME), and I've noticed that there is an applet called "CentOS Network Alert Icon" (from the

Troubles with NetworkManager
NetworkManager used to work fine for me but during the last few installations its a big hurdle in the wireless connectivity. I'm using Madwifi and its interface is correctly listed and working but I cannot connect to any wifi AP without NetworkManager. I've two interfaces: eth0 and wifi0. Starting NetworkManager doesn't show any notification icon in the top right in gnome and I believe

Gnome weather applet stranded
The Gnome weather report applet has ceased working on CentOS5/6. http://weather.noaa.gov/ says "This service is no longer available". Are there any good alternatives? I liked the applet as it allowed the use of a custom radar map. As I just discovered, the weather functionality of the CentOS6 Gnome clock applet was using the same service.

R search applet initialization
R 1.5.1 is due to come out ... and I've just noticed that the R help.start page search applet doesn't work on my Mandrake 8.2 system even though I've upgraded mozilla to version 1.0 and I have a perfectly working java (all right, I'm using 1.4.0 now, but with mozilla 0.98 and java 1.3.1 it still didn't work). I had thought the problem due to a too-old mozilla version, but it

ThinClients: Java Appletes and JavaScript
Has there been any Blogs or other discussions about Java Applets vs JavaScript? If appears (and I stress "appears") that JavaScript is getting the attention due to Googles use of AJAX and Java Applets do not have the same popularity. The reason I ask is that I have contemplated trying my hand at some Applets for my client as well as using some in...

gigantic memory leak in Clock Applet...
I've discovered recently that something on my Centos 5.8 box (up to date) is hogging a ton of RAM. so a little while ago I sat and watched top for a while. it showed (sorry, I didn't take screen shots or write this down, so the numbers are a bit rough) that out of 8 gigs of swap, around 2 1/2 was in use, and all the RAM (except for the little the kernel keeps for itself) was in use

IAX Java Softphone?
Does anyone know of an IAX softphone in Java, whether applet or application? Even the most minimum featureset, just voice and dialing, or even embedded in some other app/let. Preferably GPL. Thanks. -- (C) Matthew Rubenstein

nm-applet, wirless, and CentOS 6
I have a strange problem and I know I am doing things way outside of the box. First of all I don't like Gnome or really any of the mess-windows flavored desktop systems and no, I don't like the MacOSX flavored desktop systems (like Ubuntu's Unity) either. The 'desktop' system (if you could have called it that) that I learned on was DEC's 'DecWindows' system on

no gnome-applets in C7.2
Weird. There seems to be quite a bit of software missing from C7.2, gnome-applets being one of them. Or has it been moved or renamed or otherwise obscured? tia

Gnome weather applet stranded
Nux! writes: > Hm, this is bad. I was relying on this feature heavily. > Let's see if there is a fix. I don't imagine RH will care about this on EL6, but maybe MATE guys could help. The code for the respective applets is quite different. Mate uses weather.com, but I bet the API is different and a fix requires actual coding.

Gnome Notification Applet
...able to make it look and feel like 5.6 -- except for one thing that I also noticed in Ubuntu's newest beta (my Dad uses Linux Mint). For whatever reason, Gnome has decided to put the Volume Control and Network Manager in the Notification Applet. (It's worse with Ubuntu, they've put four applets there by default.) On my desktop I don't display the Network Manager, but I like the Volume Control to be there (on the very right beside the clock). I spent most of my "trial time" with SL 6 trying to figure out how to separate these two applets from the Notification Applet -- withou...
