multiple values in one column
I have some data files in which some fields have multiple values. For example first last sex major John Smith M ANTH Jane Doe F HIST,BIOL What's the best R-like way to handle these data (Jane's major in my example), so that I can do things like summarize the other fields by them (e.g., sex by major)? Right now I'm processing the files (in excel since they're

Help for methods
...Which doesn't explicitly mention whether this will work for S3 either way, but the results from: ?summary ?summary(lm(wt ~ mpg, data=mtcars) ?summary(data.frame()) seem to indicate that it doesn't (at least in my R2.3.0, which is out of date, but I did also search the latest NEWS file for anthing mentioning help). Would it be possible to extend this method to deal with S3 classes as well? Hadley

Samba with Domain User accounts
I am trying to find an option to M$ file server under Linux. Everything to this point is M$. Whether anybody goes for it or not, I would like to put the option out there for choice. One of the important necessities is that this doesn't become any more complicated for the EU. As soon as you say Linux to the bosses they think more complex for the user and the users have trouble enough logging in

Configuring cisco 7940
I've just managed to get hold of a cisco 7940, which looks nice but I'm unable to make it actually do anthing...! All the online manuals say things like "see your network administrator" which isn't a whole lot of use. First thing I think I need to do is work out how to set the TFTP server IP as it's using the wrong one (it's ignoring the setting in the DHCP server). When you point...

samba + ads / user and group update-probem
Hello subscribers, we have a problem with keeping our group memberships up to date. If we e.g. remove a group membership from a user, we don?t see any change when trying "wbinfo -r j.doe" or "groups j.doe". Even after hours there ist no update. We also tried restarting smb, nmb, winbindd. Anyone has an idea? Some additional info: |samba/winbind-version: 3.2.0-17.fc9

Mysql Confusion..
Ok I know this may have been covered and I did have a look back in the archives but didn't find anthing so I am asking it now.. Many moons ago the MySQL CDR functions and MySQL Voicemail functions had to be removed from the main asterisk code because of licensing issues.. Now there is new MySQL stuff like MySQL FRIENDS for SIP and IAX definitions.. So how is it that these options don't appea...

Patch : Fix includes
...f instances where a function is used before it has been prototyped. There was a little subtlty involved here because the file include/test_libs_common/metadata_utils.h had the #include guard the same as that of /src/test_libFLAC/metadata.h meaning that only the first one included would actually do anthing. App not finding /dev/nvidia0 for /dev/dri/card0 not found on inspiron 8200 with nvidia chipset
I have source for a program that is attempting to open /dev/nvidia0 then on failure open /dev/dri/card0 to get some vsync settings. Neither of those two files is found on my laptop in /dev. Is this because of udev? I cant find anthing in /dev that might be used instead. Any ideas on what to open to read vsync information from X windows? Thanks, Jerry

Multiple Group permissions with Samba
I have been trying to get a straight answer on this and hoping that someone can help me out. This is my current configuration (simplified) and what I need. We have 4 directories. Call them directory "a, b, c, and d". We also have 4 groups. Lets call them "admin, user, exec, db." We would want "amdin" group full control over all directories. Next we want group

Can we define the user's home directory as an attribute in LDAP? Is it possible to define group mappings? Anthing else I should be concerned about? samba ACL open-for-delete problem
Hi, all It seems that samba-3.4.1 still has something wrong with ACL for open-for-delete operation. I give a group of users full access, which means rwx permission, to a directory and make this as the default ACL for this directory. Then I found that I can do anthing as a member of that group but deleting files and this directory. After skiming through its source code, I did not find any ACL check at function can_delete_file_in_directory() in file file_access.c. Am I right? The following is my ACL setting: -bash-4.0$ getfacl Downloads/ # file: Downloads/...

plotmath
There's something (probably a lot) missing in my understanding of plotmath. The LaTeX code for what I'm trying to produce is \log(-\log(\hat R)) My (probably hopeless) attempt at it uses nested group()s: expression(plain(log) * group("(", -plain(log)*group("(", \hat(R), ")"), ")")) Can anyone do it right for me, please? Thanks, Ted. Dr E.A.

slow responding firewall server
...an't seem to get a handle on what is causing the delay. The only thing I can think of is that the PII450 running squid is just slow compared to the old Athlon box and I am reaping the "benefits" of that. I do find that hard to believe though, since the box isn't running X or anthing else extra. I also notice that sometimes some downloads, particularly large ones just seem to grind to a halt after a few megs, and sometimes then carry on a bit later if left, right up to full speed of the line. During this slowdown, the latency of the line even with large pings is fine, so...

Win 64 package build - ERROR: loading failed for 'x64'
I have developed an R package that works under Win32, but when I attempt to build it on Win64, I get ERROR: loading failed for 'x64' More precisely, I developed and tested the package under Win32 and it works. But when I move to a 64 bit Windows 7 (Home Premium) system, and attempt to build both 32 bit and 64 bit packages, the 32 bit package seems to build, but the 64 bit build
