Ancient SMB client issues
I have a customer with a couple of industrial robots running Linux 2.6.34 and Samba 3.4.7 (smbclient -V). They are able to connect to SMB shares on Windows servers IF I "allow unsafe connections?, ie lower the SMB minimum level. The servers are on Windows 2019, and this setup has worked for a couple of years now.
I have created a virtual Debian/Samba 4.19 server with the intention of moving

more recent perl version?
Hi,
are there packages replacing the ancient perl version in
Centos 7 with a more recent one, like 5.24? At least the
state feature is required.

Actually, I made it work by adding the ?min server protocol = NT1? on the virtual dedicated server. So I guess that this will solve our dilemma (unless I missed something).
In any case, one of the robots now have access to the new server. Will try the second one as soon as I get a chance (they are busy bending steel ;:) )

Discrepancy between is.list() and is(x, "list")

That prison of ancient design choices isn't so bad.
I have no further comments on object oriented semantics.
However, I'm planning to follow the following design pattern.
If I set the class of an object, I will append the new class to the
existing class.
#good
class (object) = c ("something", class (object) )
#bad
class (object)

CentOS 2.1 on i586
I've just attempted to reinstall my ancient laptop that has Pentium MMX
processor. Since it is ancient, I've decided to go with CentOS 2.1.
Got stuck, installer claims I need at least i686. Hmmm... I know that
3.8 and 4.4 work without a glitch on i586, so this came as surprise. I
even thing original RHEL2.1 might had support for i586 too (but I might
be wrong).
Anyhow, what

Ancient SMB client issues
Hi Anders,I solved the same problem last year. A bunch of machines with Windows NT4 (no USB, hehe).I set up a Samba server (4.18) and the machines in an isolated network with a router/firewall. The Samba server can only be reached by a couple of workstations from the main company networks using SMB_311. The workstations store job files on a Samba share, and the machines have only got read access

and can''t find any clue even on the searchable archive...
Thanks!

Why does * only work with an ancient mpg123?
Hi list!
Just wondering, why is * sticking with an mpg123 version from the
stoneage?
Gentoo comes with 0.59s-r8 and this version doesn't even start.
Ik know I could forcibly unmerge mpg123 and install the old version but I
guess some day newer versions will have to be supported?
Thanks!

Starcraft crashes
I have used Starcraft under wine for a long time, and
I have just learned to put up with random crashes.
The only version of wine I have gotten to work is
ancient (991212)! I have tried more recent versions,
but I haven't been able to get them running at all.
Is there a wine that doesn't crash randomly running
starcraft? What wine do you use for starcraft?
(BTW, there seems to be a

Linux on an ancient Macintosh G5?
Has anyone experienced the conversion of the aluminum chassis Mac G5 to a
Linux box? Curious in Pennsylvania.
I need to obtain the power cable somewhere to try it.
It is a 64-bit monster, so seems like it is worth trying if I can
find the weird cable it needs. No luck to date regarding the cable.
Thanks.

dual head on centos 5 and ancient Nvidia Quadro NVS280SD card
I was just handed a 2nd monitor for my system at work, and using Centos 5 (latest)
can't make dual head work. a good bit of googling isn't being particularly
helpful either.
It's a HP workstation xw4100, with Nvidia Quadro NVS280SD graphics card.
Enabling dual head in the "display" app simply configures X so that it
(i.e., X) won't start. I haven't found the x log
