Bursty writes - why?
I have a 24 x 1TB system being used as an NFS file server. Seagate SAS disks connected via an LSI 9211-8i SAS controller, disk layout 2 x 11 disk RAIDZ2 + 2 spares. I am using 2 x DDR Drive X1s as the ZIL. When we write anything to it, the writes are always very bursty like this: ool 488K 20.0T 0 0 0 0 xpool 488K 20.0T 0 0 0 0 xpool

ppc questions
...come find us on #centos-ppc / #centos on irc.freenode.net > As for PPC64, has anyone done benchmarking between a ppc64 and OSX > system on the same G5 hardware? Linux wins hands down. I am sitting typing this out on a Dual G5 2ghz, and I find Linux to be much more responsive than OSX. anandtech had a write-up recently where they compared OSX Server to Linux on the server side of things, iirc correctly - Linux came out on top. A bit of googling should dig up the exact article. - K

Storage Recommendations
Hello, We are going to buy some NFS storage for 6-8 VMs on a single host, but want to expand to a second host. What storage recommendations would you give if you have between 2000 and 5000 USD? How about nexenta? what hardware would you use? any vendor? Experiences with openfiler and opennas? Thanks for the responses. Daniel -- +-=====---------------------------+ |

Supermicro SAS/SATA controllers?
The standard controller that has been recommended in the past is the AOC-SAT2-MV8 - an 8 port with a marvel chipset. There have been several mentions of LSI based controllers on the mailing lists and I''m wondering about them. One obvious difference is that the Marvel contoller is PCI-X and the LSI controllers are PCI-E. Supermicro have several LSI controllers. AOC-USASLP-L8i with the

Slightly OT: Vorbis encoding benchmarks
I've been talking to some people about benchmarks for different operating systems and CPUs, and it would seem that a good way to gain some exposure for Ogg Vorbis would be to push oggenc as a benchmarking application when sites such as ExtremeTech, AnandTech, Ars Technica, etc. post system comparisons. I know that MP3 encoding is used as a common "media" benchmark, so it would be nice to get oggenc out there. In order to be a good CPU/memory bandwidth benchmark it would need to reduce the amount of disk access to the start/end of the proces...

There are sites that will do technical analysis and ratings for various flash media (such as www.anandtech.com). For example a quick google search turns up: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4523/usb-30-flash-drive-roundup These are going to be the pricier devices, though. They aren't going to be the five dollar crap that you find at the checkout counter of a computer store. But then again, you get...

How to select a motherboard
Not being familiar with chip sets and other factors that "hardware experts" understand, I am perplexed with the multitude of available motherboards. Is there a Web site that can be of help or a "strategy"? My goal is to replace my motherboard with one that is Centos compatible and uses a Pentium 4 in the 2 MHz range. As example, when I go to Mwave, I am presented with

Good SLOG devices?
Hi I''m running OpenSolaris 148 on a few boxes, and newer boxes are getting installed as we speak. What would you suggest for a good SLOG device? It seems some new PCI-E-based ones are hitting the market, but will those require special drivers? Cost is obviously alsoo an issue here.... The application is VoIP so there is not a lot of IO so I would not think Bus Speed would matter. I am finding mixed information on HT, some say it is great, others say it

3TB External USB Drive isn't recognized
We have a 3TB external USB drive that I am trying to attach to some CentOS5 servers. I have tried an older Dell PE1950 and a newer R310 but neither one seems to be able to read the drive. It works no problem on windows servers/workstations and I was able to format with NTFS. I know there are different methods for formatting large disks but this one doesn't even seem to show up as a /dev/

From: Maciej ?enczykowski <maze at cela.pl> > That's a good point - does anyone know what the new Intel > Virtualization thingamajig in the new dual core pentium D's is about?
