What's analagous to data.restore?
I've used Splus for 5 or 6 years and recently installed R for Linux. I want to get a whole bunch of objects from S over to R. I'd have thought data.dump and data.restore would work, but it's done a different way. I looked all through the FAQ but my question doesn't seem to be "Frequent" enough to be mentioned. Thanks Patrick

Summary: What's analagous to data.restore?
Thanks to Bill Venables, Brian Ripley and John Maindonald. The differences between the way R and S use objects means that data.restore is inappropriate for R. Bill advised the use of libraries to deal with objects. Functions and data objects are treated differently, requiring source() and read.table() respectively to create R objects from text files that are produced from dump() and

nlme, MASS and geoRglm for spatial autocorrelation?
...ic analysis of some spatial presence/absence data but am somewhat overwhelmed by the options available and could do with a helpful pointer. My researches so far indicate that if my data were normal, I would simply use gls() (in nlme) and one of the various corSpatial functions (eg. corSpher() to be analagous to similar analysis in SAS) with form = ~ x+y (and a nugget if appropriate). However, my data are binomial, so I need a different approach. Using various packages I could define a mixed model (eg using glmmPQL() in MASS) with similar correlation structure, but I seem to need to define a random effe...

Does Ruby / Rails have something similar to PHPs ''virtual''
Hi all Is there a rails / ruby function that is analagous to PHPs ''virtual'' function? "virtual() is an Apache-specific function which is similar to <!--#include virtual...--> in mod_include. It performs an Apache sub-request. It is useful for including CGI scripts or .shtml files, or anything else that you would parse thr...

[LLVMdev] Including flex/bison output in cvs
...but almost no windows boxes have them. This requires either 1) Forcing the user to dowload flex/bison (bad) 2) Distributing flex/bison with the front-end (not as bad, but a pain) 3) or, and this seems like a simple fix, just distribute the output of flex and bison along with the source. This is analagous to distributing "configure" along with "configure.ac". What do you guys think? -- -Alex

Can R for Windows be built outside of the top-level source directory?
The "R-admin" manual describes how to build R from outside of the top-level source directory on a *NIX machine (http://cran.r-project.org/doc/manuals/r-release/R-admin.html#Simple-compilation), but it makes no analagous mention of a way to do so under Windows. Since the build process in Windows is so different (not using configure, for instance, and typically being performed from within $R_SOURCES/src/gnuwin32/), *and* since the "R-admin" guide makes no mention of it, my guess is that it's not easily...

Graphing: plot 3rd variable based on color gradient
...I am searching for the best method to plot two variables with points whose output color depends on the size of a third variable. For example, the darkness of the x-y point would increase incrementally based on the size of the z value, similar to the colramp parameter in geneplotter. This would be analagous to symbols(), except changing the selection from the color gradient rather than the size of the plotted shape. The closest I have come so far is the levelplot() function, as below: graphdata <- alldata[,c("x","y", "size")] levelplot(size ~ x * y, data=graphdata) H...

...able to find any reason why 10 lpcs are used. i suppose 10 lpcs are enough for prediction and using more coeffs would not have made too much difference. and 10 is even, good for lpc->lsf. had read somewhere "historically", during the analog era, this number is used. or maybe 10 is analagous to a perfect number! ;-) cheers, tk

Concern with randomForest
...uals: 0.0431127 % Var explained: -22.1 Here's my concern; what is the explanation here for a negative percent variation explained? My understanding is that this value is calculated using the formula; 1-MSE(OOB)/nodesize (from Liaw & Wiener's description) Is this analagous to an r-squared that has not been run through a stepwise procedure? Should I be removing variables not contributing to models before running randomForest? This negative value seems contradictory to my standard multiple regression results which indicate up to 58% of the variation explained. Thanks...

Feature Request
...e the process is running) allow me to get that information. I'm sure that begs the question, why not just redirect to a file and parse out what you want when the backup is done? First of all, that's sort of ugly. What I have in mind is something a lot simpler. How about something *ROUGHLY* analagous to this: # cat /proc/$PID/prev (4643, 13.2% of 1027477) # cat /proc/$PID/curr usr/local/rep/3ECBF9879808410/dictdb_3ECBFB89878410OX.db # cat /proc/$PID/curr_rate 80703888 8% 65.37kB/s 3:51:30 Or even better is just to update the environment, so a simple "cat /proc/$PID/environ&qu...

MANOVA and Extra Sums-of-Squares Tests
I would like to conduct an extra sum-of -squares test that compares a full MANOVA model (with all 1st order interactions) to a reduced model (no interactions) to determine if I can drop all interactions at the same time. This is analagous to an extra sum-of-squares F-test in ANOVA, but instead using MANOVA. Is there a command in R that does this? If not, is there a command that calculates residual sum-of-squares and cross-product matrices? Thanks. -- View this message in context: http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/MANOVA-and-Extra-Su...
